Show THE AFTERMATH Dedication of Buildings Ends the Columbian Anniversary I I Comments of the London limes on the dedication ded-ication Wonders Can Be Accomplished When Patriotism Is the Motive CHICAGO Oct 22The closing exercises connected with the Columbian anniversary in relation to the Worlds fair took place today when a number of state buildings were dedicated The exercises of dodicat lag the Iowa and Massachusetts buildings occurred this morning and this afternoon New York Ohio and Rhode Island dedicated dedi-cated their buildings lowaa the dedication was enlivened by presence of 3000 state troops who fired a salute as the governors party entejred the grounds James O Crosby president of the Iowa commission turned over the buildIng build-Ing to Governor Boies who in turn delivered deliv-ered it to the exposition management Then after a dedicatory poem Judge Leeds delivered an historical oration The dedication of the Ohio state building build-ing brought out the entire state legislature all the state officers the Ohio Historical society and 2000 state militia I took soy entyfive carriages to convey the dignitaries dignitar-ies to the grounds while the state troops marched as escorts to Governor McKinley and staff to Twentysecond street and proceeded pro-ceeded by train the rest of the way When the grounds were reached speeches were made by Governor McKinley Senator Sherman Senator Brice and CaPtain W W Peabody president of the board of state managers New York dedicated its magnificent building this afternoon It is an ciuet reproduction of the magnificent old Van Rennsailer mansion at Albany and is in old colonial style Many distinguished people participated in or were present at the exercises ex-ercises After music and prayer the dedication dedi-cation began with a formal assignment of the building to exposition uses by Hon Chauncey M Depew as president of the board of managers of the New York state exhibit in an eloquent speech Then came the acceptance of the building bJ Director General Davis and next addresses by Governor Flower and Archbishop Corn pan The dedication poem by W H Mc Elroy and music by Susas marine band broucht the dedication to a close The dedication of tho large substantial looking Kansas building was opened with prayer by Rev Dr Miller Then the famous fam-ous Modoc club that sang at the centennial in IbTU sang Hail Happy Kansas Then A J Felt delivered t short address followed fol-lowed bV music Then an address by George Wlpans superintendent of Kansas schools one by Martin Mohon Kansas commissioner of agriculture and Mrs Lewis Hatibfioh one ofthe board of lady managers Judge Alfred H White delivered deliv-ered the dedicatory address The plcturasqua Massachusetts building a reproduction of the old Hancock colonial mansion In Boston the home of the signers oilho declaration of independence was dedicated with due ceremony B C Hovey state commissioner in D brief speech turned the building over to Gov Russell who made 2 brief speech in response and returned the building to Mr Hovoy as executive ex-ecutive commissioner ecutve The dedicatory exercises at the little Rhode Island building Degan at 2 oclock this afternoon Commissioner G C Shams chairman of the building committee made the opening speech ana delivered tho keys to Gov Browne The governor responded accepting the building and in turn handed over tho keys to Executive Commissioner Wyman who made an appropriate response re-sponse |
