Show Another Man Gone Wrong THE HERALD a few days ago received a lecture from the town scold about the uncomplimentary un-complimentary manner in which we treated 0 circular by A HANAUER in reply to a speech of J L RAWLINS This little document docu-ment by Mr HANADER claimed that the reduction re-duction of dry ores since the new tariff bill went into operation had bean lessened in cost from 3 to 2S per ton and that with lead higher the smelting charges bad been reduced from 3 to 5 a ton Mr RAIVLINS his remarks quoted from a speech by MOSES TnATCHERrSt the Provo convention and it was tho = statement the th6tstatemont latter gentleman made whicS caussd HAN I Least to rush so madly into print This morning when he reads THE HERALD he will wish he had not been quite so precipitate precipi-tate and the dear old Tribune that relied so implicitly on the assertions of the circular cir-cular may with the greatest ease crawl into the same hole There is also a statement state-ment by Mr R C CHAMBERS of the Ontario On-tario and Daly mines which puts to sleep Mr HANAUERS figures relative to silver and lead Mr THATCHER in making out his case I not obliged to delve into stale prices current cur-rent or overhaul a lot of tiresome statistics printed in Congressional and other records He has but one witness Mr HANAUER himself The proofs are In tho form of contracts signed by Mr H and which must confuse him to Buy the least I is shown by Mr THATCHER that instead in-stead of there being a reduction in smelting smelt-ing charges of from S3 to 3 per ton after the McKiNLEr bill went into effect there was un increase the first year of 175 on dry ore and 350 on ore carrying I to 20 per cent of lead and for the present year of 9 on dry oro and 340 on the other But the most interesting portion of Mr THATCHERS communication relates to the manner in which the Utah mines were relieved by the action of the railroads and to this we call especial attention Altogether it may be Raid that thero never has been mora complete and overwhelming over-whelming refutation of the Republican and Liberal charge that the mining interests have been benentted by the MCCSNLET tariff and THE HERALD readers will doubt loss join us in thanking Messrs THATCHER and CHAMBERS for putting the mat in Its right light t |
