Show THE COUNTY TEACHERS Regular Meeins Held a the University Univer-sity Yesterilay Morning Salt Lake countys teachers Held their regular monthly institute yesterday yes-terday morning at the University of Utah The attendance was above the average The first exercise on the programme was a paper upon Expression in Reading by Miss M A Holton superintendent su-perintendent of primary instruction in the Salt Lake city schools Among the objections to getting expressions by imitation the following were given 1 Independence is not gained 2 Thought is not expressed 3 I does not make pupils work 4 I Is memory work ing 5 I does not create a love for read 6 I gives poor results 7 I violates many principles of education edu-cation On the contrary expression is gained by questioning and leading pupils to appreciate the thought To question aright is a difficult matter Much of the success of a teacher depends tipon the character of the questions he puts Among the rules for questioning considered affirmatively af-firmatively may be named 1 They should be logical 2 They should be clear concise and to the point adapted to the ability of the pupil should be definite and lead to logical thought Professor W M Stewart followed his subject being a continuation of the address given before the last meeting Morad Control ind Incentives Professor Pro-fessor Stewart spoke from the viewpoint view-point of psychology analyzing carefully care-fully the feelings and showing the relation of feeling to will and will to moral action He discussed carefully motive showing that it directed moral action He also considered conscience showing that it embodied the feeling of obligation and ° in the performance of the act the accompaniment of complacency com-placency and remorse He felt that the child acts through the strongest motive mo-tive not overlooking the fact that conscious action directed by motive resulted in formation of automatic resuled acton ac-ton which is character He also discussed dis-cussed malevolent and benevolent motives mo-tives The theory was stated that mind has an impulse to act in accordance accor-dance with law that there is an inborn in-born tendency to harmonize the self with the universe or all truth and in its attempt to do so in ignorance of law it conflicts with lawit conflicts with the actual realizauion of self This conflict still goes on and has from the first and from the experience of the human race certain facts or certain truths are adopted which truths furnish us a moral code Children Child-ren should be taught to do right Good results and strong character come from doing right As the muscles become be-come firm and strong by use so character char-acter results from a series of right actions ac-tions Statistics show that in educated communities where good morals arc supposed to reach a high plane there is a large amount of crime thus revealing the fact that the training and incentives to right action are wrong l their premises |
