Show VTAH AD STATEHOOD The interview with Hon John T Caine an account of which appears in another column forms another les son to the Utah public not to place reliance on the partisan statements of our morning contemporarys special correspondent at Washington They are evidently written more with a desire to suit the paper on which he Is engaged en-gaged than regard for the truth or to inform the public mind The object in view in those dispatches for some time has been to prejudice the Utah people against the Democratic Demo-cratic party and to create the ImpressIon im-pression that statehood is to come to Utah from the eleventh hour efforts of the party that can do nothing in regard to the matter either one way or the other That the statehood movement maybe may-be delayed a little longer than was hoped and anticipated is quite probable prob-able That it will be pc > stPoned for any great length of time is not likely There are questions of public concern which have precedence and which cannot can-not be thrust abide to make way for the interest of one territory of the Union That does not argue any disposition dis-position to Ignore Utahs claims or to arrest the movement for her liberties Those who fondly hope for such a course on the part of file Dernocratic party will be sadly disappointed It is funny to see the party which has fought all attempts to give Utah political freedom suddenly pushing to the front at breakneck speed in pretence pre-tence that it is the only true and faithful friend she has and in an effort to make = her believe thatil has always been ready to do her good only she was too wicked t9 be recognized I recog-nized until she manifested Republican proclivities Just as soon as she put on Republican ribbons and frills she became suddenly pure and altogether i I lovely That this manifetation of regard for the party which Utah has had to defend de-fend herself against for so many yean has surprised the Democratic leaders is very natural But that it will prevent I pre-vent their continued efforts in her be I hlf we do not anticipate And whatever what-ever course may be pursued the people of Utah need notlook for reliable information in-formation from the partisanhued pencilings of our morning contempo rarys Washington correspondent |
