Show A SIXGULAR PHOCEDDIiVG That was a rather peculiar proceeding proceed-ing in the L Legislative Council on Saturday Satur-day when some people not connected I with the Assembly were admitted to I the floor of the Council and one of their number nota member made a speech and presented the President of the Council with a gavel l The most remarkable part of the affair was that it was made the qc casion of a purely partisan endeavor to revive the unpleasant and disgraceful disgrace-ful episode of the four runaways as though the course was to their credit and to give fictitious importance to the partisan memorial which was the cause of the fiasco The remarks of the spokesman of the oqcasion vere the very essenceof ab v 4 ht < A f 1 I i ± L surdity In likening the President of the Council to the boy who put his finger in a hole in a dyke and thus prevented disaster and destruction to a largely inhabited region his exaggeration exagger-ation was superlative Besides the element ele-ment of the ludicrous in the simile there was utter nonsense in the notion no-tion that anything disastrous would have come to Utah if the lead memorial memor-ial had failed to pass If it had gone into the waste basket or been used to fill up a rathole the result would have been the same The memorial apart from the errors it contains was not expected to have any effect on Congress It was prepared pre-pared to please a portion of the people of Utah It was campaign stage thunder thun-der that is all To make that petition appear as necessary to the salvation of Utah when it is not and cannot be of any earthly use except as we have maintained is the very acme of unmitigated un-mitigated bosh The remarks of Mr Williams which appear in full in Jie report were just aijd to the point and the spice of sarcasm sar-casm as to the runaways intermingled with his complimentary remarks as to the President were in the very happiest vein i Nobody will object to the compliment I paid to President Breeden but every I sensible person will perceive the folly I and bad taste of the illmannered attempt at-tempt of the presenter of the gavel to make the whole matter partisan and insulting to a portion of the body i which permitted the intrusion Somebody Some-body ought to have used that gavel to l knock a little sense into the head of the inapt spokesman of the Republican Republi-can club |
