| Show biTIlo The National Memorial In Philadelphia PHILADELPHIA Feb 22The initial L steps toward the erection of a memorial to perpetuate the memory of the events leading lead-ing to the foundation of the United States government were taken in this city today to-day with the cooperation of a large representative repre-sentative gathering of Congressmen and I state authorities The gathering was a notable one including nearly a full representation repre-sentation from the thirteen original states and scattering reports from others The meeting was held under the auspicious of the executive commitfee of the governors appointed by the thirteen original states The gathering assembled in the Continental Conti-nental hotel this morning and was presided pre-sided over by Governor Green of New Jersey After an address o welcome and replies the party visited Carpenters hall where the first continental congress sat and where the early framework of the constitution was adopted next to Independence Indepen-dence hall the old cradle of liberty the visitors then proceeded upstrairs to the common council chamber where Governor Green called for order and named General Banks for chairman Addresses were made by Governor Biggs of Delaware Congressman Con-gressman Carter of Montana Congressman Congress-man Clunie of California and others in support of the projected memorial Upon the conclusion of Ciunies address the meeting meet-ing adjourned and the visitors returned to the hotel for luncheon At 2 oclock carriages car-riages were taken at the hotel and tile visitors vis-itors were driven through Fairmount park to examine the sites for the proposed memorial A banquet will be tendered the visitors this evening The banquet at the Continental hotel tonight to-night was a brilliant affair covers for 500 being laid Many speeches were made all of the orators favoring the project which brought todays assemblage together to-gether |
