| Show THE CHIEF JUSTICE Of the United States Praises Our I Judicial System CUSTOMS STATIONS I ALASKA The National Memorial In Philadelphia Lenten Fast Abolished this Year Additional Addi-tional Appropriations Asked For CHICAGO Feb 22At the anniversary celebration at the Union Leage club this evening in honor of Washingtons birthday birth-day an interesting programme was presented pre-sented Several speeches were made the principal one by Chief Justice Fuller on Our Federal Judiciary The sentiment he said is obviously appropriate to the celebration of Washingtoas birthday for it was Washington who urged upon the continental congress while the smoke of Bunker Hill still lingered in the air the creation of a federal tribunal with jurisdiction juris-diction coextensive with what were the united colonies and provinces of Great Britain in North America and later when the constitution was put into operation opera-tion Washington with characteristic character-istic sagacity forseeing the great part which the judicial department would play in the development of our institutions called it in his letter tendering the chief justiceship to Jay the keystone of the political fabric The chief justice spoke of the judgments and powers ofthe federal judicial department and said that nothing has done more to xioinin end that department to the confidence and respect of the people than its scrupulous abstinence absti-nence from the decision strictly political questions nod its rigid adherence to the exercise of none but judicial powers and it is this acquiescence of the union of the states the people and their stats I authorities au-thorities in the conclusions of the judicial department that demonstrates the success of popular government since it implies a capacity to observe selfim posed restraints I seems to me as the years roll on that the judiciary gains more and more in the affection and trust of the people national and state for the federal and state courts are parts of one whole and their lights shine from the same firmament alike They seek that understanding of heart which will enable them to discern between thatwhich is good and that which is bad and so to sit wisely in judgment amid this so reat a people the people of George Washington |
