| Show Customs Stations in Alaskan Waters Alaslln WASHINGTON Feb 22 Senator Dolphs bill to constitute Mary island Wrangel Juneau Sand PointKodiakand Ouanalaska posts of delivery within the collection dis rict of Alaska aud appropriating 25000 to erect the necessary buildingsat Mary island and Sand Point was referred by the Senate committee on commerce to Secretary Secre-tary Windom for the expression of his views thereon In response the Secretary t says Mary island is of no value except for custom house purposcs This is recommended recom-mended as the bestsite forthe initial port for peninsular trade bjr officers of the customs cus-toms revenue marine ccast survey and shipping and merchantile interests Wrangel one hundred miles north of Mary island has already been constituted a customs station by administrative action I is an old and somewhat important station sta-tion of trade Juneau is on the main land the peninsula 200 miles north of Wrangel towards Sitka The necessary offices and buildings are there I is a large and flourishing town the center of an industrious indus-trious territory Kodiak is on an island of that name nearly one hundred mile west of Sitka It is the center of the salmon fishing and canning industry and important impor-tant resources of the territory There is a single officer and proper building on the ground San Point is on Popoff island one of the Aleutian chain several hundred miles from the main land I is a rendezvous for hundreds of fishing and hunting vessels and therefore one of the most important customs stations in the territory The inducements in-ducements for smuggling and demoralizing traffic with the natives are so great and so largely exercised that no time should be lost providing the necessary supervision says the secretary J Ounalaska is in the Aleutian chain 1200 miles west of Sitka at the principal entrance en-trance to Beliring sea A customs officer has been stationed there many years Except Ex-cept at Mary island and Sand Point the the secretary says there will be no expense ex-pense consequent upon the passage of the bill |
