Show FRED DUBOIS HENCHMEN Exasperate Decent People by Burning Clssrretc In Effigy POCATELLO Idaho Feb 15 1891 To the Editor of THE HEKALD Considerable excitement was created ia Pocatello Idaho on February 12 by an effigy hanging to a telegraph pole labelled L5 J Briggs of Eagle Rock Republi can Representative The Traitor Great was the excitement created thereby there-by but greater still the shame that was to be seen on the face of every Republican in Pocatello who had voted for this same Briggs at the last election After dark fire was set to the effigy and several holes shot through it by the selfsame unreason ing hoodlum element that has always composed com-posed a large part of the following of Fred Dubois And why all this excitement aboutBriggs t Just simply because Briggs coming from r this county the county the geographical position of which is F supposed to be ia Dubois hip pocket had dared to cast his vote for William H Claggett for United States Senator to succeed Senator McCen nell and thus endangerthe seat so intensely coveted by the gentleman carpetbagger from Illinois It is not to be thought that the better class of Republicans in Pocatello had any band in this disgraceful affair As near as can be learned it was done in a revengeful spirit by two or three of the lowest ot Duboishenchmen who care for nothing butt a few crumbs that may be thrown to them doglike from the Senatorial table and whose records can best be learned by reference refer-ence to the Pocatello police court It is to bo regretted that a few of that class of people can tiring the blush of shame to the faces of men so vastly their superiors that no stretch of a debased imagination can bring them up to the level of the men whose heads they have calised to hang as the mention of the Republican party of this county The selfsame hoodlums who hung up the effigy loudly gave notice they would ship it to Eagle Rock the home of Briggs In the morning when they were informed by a man whose loyal Republicanism has never been doubted that Briggs bad been elected by their own votes and that if he had broken faith with Dubois it was only ia accord with the example set him by hia master Upon this advice they concluded to burn the effigy which was done amid tha drunken hurrahs of the crowd that initiated the orgie 9 The people of Bingham county regardless regard-less of party affiliation condemn the action and it has made friends to Judge Clagget of men who before ridiculed the idea of anyone any-one daring to contestthe election of Dubois Disgraceful though the act was many would be the rejoicings If it would help tha seating of Claggett and in such manned contribute to the disruption of the corrupt ring that has been running politics into its lowest level to elect Dubois men to the first Idaho legislature |
