Show WE MERELY STATED FACTS A few days ago the Tribune stated that the wealth of this country had increased five times faster than the population during forty years of protection We at once proved that the wealth per capita in this country had increased as follows fol-lows in the last forty years while she population had increased less than three times 1850 1SCO 1870 1SSO 1SOO S501 5993 5780 S3TO 51000 The wealth in 1890 is estimated the census figures not yet being completed It appeared further that the wealth of the United States increased twice as fast under the first decade of low tariff as it ever has under the subsequent decades of protection The organ also asserted that the wealth of freetrade England increased only twice as fast as the population Whereupon we quoted the statistics of the increase of wealth in Groat Britain showing that under free trade the wealth pet capita in that country is increasing 1318 yearly as compared with a yearly increase of 310 under sixty previous years of protection It was further shown that the wealth per head in Great Britain is increasing much faster than in this country nearly four times faster according to MULHALL The reader Is invited to notice the subterfuge sub-terfuge the organ is driven to in order to escape from this last embarrassment THE HERALD repeats that during the first ten years that England came down to real free trade the wealth per capita in the United Kingdom increased much faster than it ever had before It gives the credit to free trade Observe that Tun HERALD gave no credit to anything as there was no occasion oc-casion to do so The Tribune had asserted point blank that the wealth ofthis country increased three times faster than that of Great Britain and we simply quoted the statistics showing that the wealth of the English is increasing the more rapidly For the organ now to admit the fact and then endeavor to account for it in some other way is an amusing exhibition of catching at a straws shadow To the two sets of facts the following devious rejoinder is put forth by the organ Again it compares the relative increase per capita in England and tho United States while the population of England remains just about stationary and the population of our country increases about 30 per cent every decade All such arguments as those are pettifogging Observe again that this paper made no argument whatever but simply presented pre-sented statistics that completely overturned over-turned every assertion the organ had made The organ dares not dispute the correctness correct-ness of the statistics nor does it dare let its readers see any of them but tries to make out that wo had presented some argument or other on free trade It is really amusing to watch the shuffles ovasionsand twistings the editor of the protection sheet goes through in his efforts to hide the truth from his readers We find it a pleasant diversion to prod and then watch him |
