Show I A QEEE DECISION The Chicago Municipal Authorities Author-ities Hold That if the Italians Employed in Jackson Park Are Aliens They Are not Entitled to Police Protection CHICAGO Feb 16President Gage of the Worlds fair directory sent a letter to Mayor Creg r today calling his attention to the intimidation of workmen by unemployed I unem-ployed men at Jackson park the danger of serious labor riots and the necessity of police protection The mayor directed the corporation counsel to draw up an opinion and the conclusion was reached that the city would not undertake to keep a force of police on the grounds in anticipation of trouble but in case of riot the police would be sent to suppress it The request for such force however must come from the park commissioners not from tho contractors con-tractors or Worlds fair officials although thecommissioners are not on the ground and seldom in session The main points made in conclusion are that the parks are under the direct control of the commissioners commission-ers and are provided with their own police force and therefore the city has no right to interfere except by request of the park commissioners 2If the report is true that the Italians employed are aliens they are not entitled to police protection as under an act passed by tne state legislature in iesy it is male unlawful for any board commissioner officer of-ficer or contractor acting for or under any municipality to employ aliens The point i mado that this is applicable because the city has raised 5000100 on bonds In support sup-port of the fair The force of park police in Jackson park at present does not exceed half a dozen men and of course is wholly Inadequate to cope with a mob which might number anywhere from five hundred to five thousand men |
