Show CONCERNING HOUNDS What John Gilmer Speed Has to Say About Them SOME OF THEIR PECULIARITIES The Fox Hound is Perhaps the Best Known to Most People A HichPriced St Bernard In general the hound may be said to be a domesticated hunting dog seeking its game either by eye or scent and killing it for mans use The foxhound is perhaps better known to more people than any other of the many breeds of hounds He has been bred for 1 many years and with so definite an end in view that the result has been wonderfully satisfactory But one use has been made of himthe hunting of the fox or some artificial substitute therefor He should be about twentyfive inches in height with a small rounded ear made so I by cutting or burning in the dogs infancy < in-fancy He has much work to do and should be well built for it with straight legs feet round and not too large f3l < a chest rather i i deep that he may W breathe well and I 1f W easily a broad I J back and thin l neck and small i head Those who > l raise them should t 7h t remember that he is to be one of a 1 pack and that 1tt7i > sameness of size Doo m the various dogs I r Champion Bloodhound constituting the j pack is more desirable than large size of any individual In color they may vary greatly from black and tan to white through mixed colors of all sorts Noso and speed and endurance they must have and the structural points most certain tog to-g e those qualities have been cultivated at the expense of all others It is now about 150 years since the first pack of foxhounds with huntsman and whippersin on horseback was established in Dorsetshire in England In this country there were packs Virginia and the south many years ago but in the northern country they have been established during the last twenty years or so and now there are many packs affording their owners and their friends many days of exciting and valuable sport The harrier is a dwarf hound used as his name indicates in haro or rabbit hunting In all but size he is very like the foxhound It is probable however that the ordinary rabbit dog of this country is a mongrel not very closely I related to the true harrier I The beagle is a very small and delicate little hound standing about twelve or fourteen inches high although sometimes not higher than nine inches Their tongues are musical and their noses excellent They are patient and persevering and as they must be followed when at work by men on foot their speed is not great or important im-portant In color they are generally black white and tan or black and white The dachshund is a dog bred for use in the field or forests in Germany He is though slow very certain in scent and performance per-formance In England and this country he is kept if Ht all as a companion and his intelligenca sad cleanliness make him agood one He is long in body and short of leg with long ears and a face something like a bloodhound The greyhound the large smooth coated dos with which we are all familiar makes an excellent companion being kind affectionate affec-tionate and intelligent For work or sport he is TfrrBrRdays cnly used in coursing trials To win in these great speed and great courage cour-age are needed and these qualities are possess pos-sess Tnly by dogs of high breeding The deerhound one of the oldest breeds of dogs known The breed was almost I < j permitted to become extinct but owing to the great care exercised by a few owners the breed was cultivated and now there are many kennels devoted to the raising and breeding of these noble dogs As a companion he i3 chiefly desirable for his grand size and his defect is desire to chase any moving object or pickup small dogs I He has great strength and is a swift runner run-ner In the west he is becoming a favorite and is used in the hunting of all large game and he is useful to shepherds whose hbeep need protection rather than to be prevented from straying t CHIEFTAIN rChampion Dccrhound The bloodhound has been in some dis grace in popular estimation in this country owing to the use made of a dog of inferior breeding and character in the south to hunt criminals or escaped prisoners but as he is becoming better known he is becoming becom-ing better liked He is really kindly and affectionate and of noble disposition He is keen of scent and tenacious of purpose He has a face singularly sad in expression a stately bearing and a dignified manner His friendship once won is never lost He will follow a trail until the game is rundown run-down notwithstanding obstacles of tho most serious character It is said however 1 that he will not hurt a man he has rundown run-down if the man make no fight or no attempt I at-tempt at escape Juo GILMER SPEED I |
