Show KIPLING ON 3IORMONISH I I Probably the dreariest and scrubbiest of I recent articles on Mormonism is that of RUDTARD KIPLING in the Sunday issue of the down town antiMormon sheet It begins with the quotation A fool is full of words and thoroughly exemplifies that fact by showing the writer of the article ar-ticle to be just such a character In a waste of words amounting to three columns the imbecile has scarcely hit the truth half a dozen times Speaking of this city for example ex-ample he approaches the truth in this remark re-mark In that city the Gentiles are only one third of the total population but the mass of em are grown men capable of voting A little further on he tells of a distinction between Mormon and Gentile Main street appears to be inhabited by the commercial Gentile who has made of it a busy bustling thoroughfare and in tho eye of the sun swigs tho ungodly lager and smokes the improper im-proper cigar alfclay long For which I like him It must be very gratifying to our thrifty commercial Gentiles to be praised in this miserably maudlin fashion The puerile writer has this to say of tho temple now in course of erection in this city There is no design These men directly inspired in-spired from on high headed stone on stone and pillar on pillar without achieving either dignity relief or interest There is over the main door some pitiful scratching In stone representing the allseeing eye the Masonic grip the sun moon and stars and perhaps other skittles The flatness and meanness of the whole thing make you weep Another extract will disclose the extent of the writers knowledge concerning the Book of Mormon And MOSES said unto the people of Israel Great Scott what air you doing There is no sentence in the Book of Mormon word to word with the foregoing but the general tone is not widely different To a person desiring some information on tho subject the foregoing extract would be peculiarly exasperating from the depth of its senseless vacuity The following nit information concerning concern-ing the Z C M L the largest cooperative institution in this city is also replete with interesting nonsense The church I fancy looks after the finances of this institution and it consequently pays good dividends Concerning tho appearance of tho Mormon Mor-mon people the following libel is uttered The faces of the women were not lovely The women wore hidious garments and the men appeared to be tied up with strings Now how does that libel correspond with an assertion of the same idiot just a little before in the same pusillanimous article Here is the other assertion And you bet your sweet life there is a holy influence in-fluence working to their conversion in tho kiss of the average Gentile especially when the girl knows that he wont think necessary for her salvation to load the house up with other women wo-men folk We suppose the average Gentile will very much relish being told that he likes to kiss ugly women I One more quotation wll complete the self exposure of the weak ignoramus that thus proves himself a chattering magpie But today so far from killing openly or secretly se-cretly or burning Gentile farms it is all the Mormon dare do to freely try to boycott the interloper in-terloper His journals preach defiance to the United States government and in the tabernacle taberna-cle on Sunday the preachers follow suit When I went there the place was full of people who would have been much better for a washing KIPLING then felicitates himself that fate did not order him to be a brick in the upbuilding of the Mormon church but it seems a pity the weak dunce could not hare added one thing more namely how glad the Mormons are for the same reason Now we ask every selfrespecting non Mormon here what he thinks of this stale trash about the Mormons which the Salt Lake Tribune parades with such gusto and I thunders forth the announcements concerning con-cerning it days in advance This is the kind of stuff that journal delights in the sort of miserable diatrines that it eagerly secures and publishes in order to injure the Mormons The article in question is weak to be sure but it discloses none the less the malice of the Salt Lake newspaper that would stoop to publish it It is this kind of literature that keeps this territory from making the progress which its resources re-sources and advantages call for and there must be a cessation of such paltry meanness mean-ness or the growth of the territory will forever be hampered |
