| Show NEXT YEAR The congressional apportionment bill having been passed and received the Presi dential approval one may with a reasonable reason-able degree of certainty guess as to the outcome of the national election next year There are certain states which may be definitely assigned it being known today as well as it will be known on the morning after tho election for which partys candi dates the electoral vote will be given The indications are that the doubtful states will be fewer in number and they will be made up almost entirely of states which have heretofore been Republican a Iowa which now has a Democratic governor gover-nor Wisconsin which not only has a Democratic Dem-ocratic governor but legislature which is overwhelmingly Democratic Kansas which is under the control of the Farmers Alliance an organization more opposed to the Republican than to the Democratic party and Nebraska which was partially rescued from the Republicans last November Novem-ber California will also pose as a doubtful state unless the Republicans shall nominate a man for the presidency who is a favorite with the people of the Pacific Coast BLAINE who is more admired in the far west than any other Republicans would at once lift California out of the doubtful column while the renomination of ARRISON would in all probability give the Golden state to the Democracy New Hampshire which under some circum stances might be classed as doubtful will doubtless adopt the extreme eastern idea which will be antiDemocratic and will therefore cast her vote for the Republican I nominee The apportionment law under which the election will be held provides for 356 Representatives in Congress to which must be added the eightyeight Sen ators to find the number of votes in the electoral college 444 Assuming that there will be no third candidate in the field who can carry a single state the electoral vote being held bS the two great parties > i will require 223 votes to elect the President and VicePresident Let us see now how the totals will stand first arranging ranging the states in a column where we may with a reasonable degree of con iidence expect to find them on the morning succeedIng the election democratic Republican Alabama 11 California 9 Arkansas 8 Colorado 4 Connecticut 6 Idaho 3 Delawareu 3 Illinois 24 Florida 4 Iowa 13 Georgia 13 Kansas 10 ndiana 15 Maineou 6 KentuckyhI3 Massachusetts15 Louisiana 8 Michigan 14 Maryland nh 8 Minnesota 9 Mississippi 0 Nebraska 8 Missouri 17 Nevada 3 i Montana u 3 New Hampshire 4 New Jersey 10 North Dakotau 3 NewYork36 Ohio 23 North Carolina11 Oregon 4 South Carolina 9 Pennsylvanii23 Tennessee 13 Rhode Islando 4 Texas 15 South Dakota 4 Virginia 12 Vermont 4 West Virginia 6 Washington 4 Wisconsin12 Wyoming 3 229 215 I will be seen that we have placed all the really doubtful states save one in the Republican Re-publican column these being Idaho Michi gen and Wisconsin with a total electoral vote of 29 Michigan is today under a Democratic government liko Wisconsin and a little good work will fetch Idaho into line as the people up there are daily growing more disgusted with the Republican Republi-can bossism which leaves nothing to the voters The doubtful state which has been classed as Democratic is Connecticut which usually follows New York in Presidential Presi-dential elections But the Democrats can lose Connecticut next year and still win even without any of the 29 votes which we have indicated as doubtful The outlook was never brighter for the Democracy There is only one thing to fear and that is that a mistake will be made in the nomination The right kind of a man will get 86 majority in the electoral elec-toral college |
