Show A Mail Car Burned at Blue Creek DENATHI Feb 21An Ogden special to the Republican says There was an interesting inter-esting and exciting race on the Central Pacific Pa-cific this morning near Blue creek thirty five miles west of here It was a race against time and the goal ahead was a water tank six miles distant As the westbound west-bound fast mail reached a point six miles east of Blue creek the engineer discovered that the mail car which was filled with through mail was on fire An effort was made to put it out butthere being no water near the engineer threw open the throttle and resolved to reach tho water tank if possible pos-sible t save his valuable cargo Each min uto the burning train was a mile nearer the promised rescue Six minutes landed the burning train under the spout of the tank but too late The interior was a seething mass of flames and 15S sacks of through mail were almost totally consumed Word soon spread through the coaches that the train was on fire The greatest excitement prevailed and it a hard to prevent passengers pas-sengers from jumping from the cars Thomas Orchard chief clerk of the railway mail service at Ogden was on the train He says ho is unable to give even a theory of the firing of the train as itseems impossible sparks impos-sible that it should have caught from flying |
