Show The County Convention There was a fine attendance of delegates at the county court house yesterday John C Cute was elected chairman C L Miller I and Richard Howe vice chairman Arthur Parsons I Par-sons secretary and T Hull assistant secretary The usual committee on credentials was appointed ap-pointed and during their absence John N Pike was called upon to address the convention He thought there were other present who were better qualified to address the convention on the issues of tho day He therefore begged t be excused His views had been heretofore expressed ex-pressed and wero well known to all those present Mr Harrington was called for but his nato modesty forbade any response Thomas Howells was the next one but he declined de-clined to entertain the audience THE CAL rOl THE CONVENTION was then read and In response to a quety from ono of the members the chairman stat J tat tho officers to be nominated were two selectmen select-men a superintendent of county schools and a collector Tho selectmen whose terms rrc about to expire aic Samuel Bennion and E M Weiler AGAINST THE PEST H USn Paul Elklns of Sugarhouse asked permission to lay before tho convention a grievance that the peonle of that pat of the county had I was the location of the pst house in thilt district which ho denounced as an outrage and control to the Saw The maintenance of the pest house In tat vicinity was a menace to the lives of the residents of Sugarhouse The city council her had been appealed ap-pealed but In vain The persons in charge of the pest house maintained no quarantine regulations regu-lations whatever Boys were hid to do chores about the place and were sect home with a piece of camphor in their pockets A petition to the county cur had been treated with silent contempt con-tempt As had been stated about half of the county court was about to retire and he favored the nomination and election of men in their stead who would do their duty who would be tho servants of the people John N Pike sympathized with the speaker and other residents of Sugarhouse but failed to see what the convention could do in tho matter Having purchased the building out there the city thought i could bo put to a good use but this was not the only point to be considered Its being thereif WAS REVOLTING and it was the right of the people to demand Its removal Our quarantine regulations ara not enforced as they should be anywhere When a case of diphtheria occurred in this city a flag was put up to as to warn people on the outside not to run ito danger but people on the Inside can go out and where they please Let ls put in office men who will be the servants of the public and when they become our master put them out The time has come when we should take Create interest In affairs that L closely concerns us Applause There is entirely TOO MCCn OF A FUSION of the city and county interests A rupture between be-tween the city and county wpuld be productive ot od If the pest bousequestion will accom pllshit Applause let us pus the matter to the end E S Wright said that certain charges had been made against the city council If any more charges were to be made he thought they shouii be specific instead of implied His motion to that effect however was swamped The committee on credentials having returned I re-turned and a permanent organization being perfected per-fected W I Rowe placed in nomination foi I selectman Richard Howe The nomination was received with applause and Mr Howe was elected there not voice bping 1t a dissenting voie Orrin 1 Miller William Naylor Samuel Bennion I T Spencer and Spencer Clawson weie named for the other selectmen Mr Claw sons name was withdrawn however and Mr Millers name being put resulted in a nearly unanimous choice there being but two or three dissenting voices THC COLLECTOR L G Hardy was the unanimous choice of the convention for collector FOU COUNTY SUPEIUNTENDENT Thomas Hull arose He was about to nominate nomi-nate a man for the oco of county superintendent superintend-ent of district schoola who had made a better record in that capacity than any of his predecessors prede-cessors in that office a ntleman who had per tl < r formed his duties honesty and conscientiously William M Stewart Applause John N Pim seconded the nomination hear ily and thought no better selection could be made Referring to the report of the expenses of the csunty he said he was surprised to find that the countS superintendent received so small a salary He got less than hal that given to other officers who did about half the work I was the opinion o tho speaker that a man should be paid for the work he performed rather than for the office he held Applause Mr Stewarts name big put to the convention conven-tion ho received the unanimous vote The convention then adjourned sine die |
