Show GOVERNOR WARRENS CASE The attacks on Governor WAKKCX of Wyoming in certain eastern newspapers continue and while it is not probable that they will bring about his removal there is no denying the fact that these publications charging crookedness and fraud against his excellencyaredecidedly lUplcasant for him It is to the credit of the governor that his chief accuser is one WILLIAM WAKE PCCK a man who was appointed to judgeship by HATES and who soon succeeded in making himself so unpopular that the legislature adopted a resolution requesting his removal re-moval Tnn HERALD recalls the circumstance cir-cumstance and remembers well how indignant the press and people were when HAYES refused to grant the request PECK had been a schoolmate of H YES and was one of the fraudulent Presidents pets hence nothing that the people of an insignificant territory could say would have any influence influ-ence with the appointing power The other day a World reporter found Governor WARREN in New York and questioned him regarding the accusations It is but justice to the governor to let him be heard in explanation in this community where he is so well known He said I am not concerned about the charges circu luted against me In the least They have all been estimated by my political antagonists and I have been completely vindicated As to the charge that I have made false statements In my application for preemption entries I will say that my application was filed at the land office in Washington over three years ao and the patent was issued to me last year Genera SPARKS and his successor In the land office carefully care-fully Investigated all the charges against me upon granting mv patent Neither found the 1 Werlf tfnJIr slightest ground for withholding it Mr STOCK SLACnii sent a special agent a Democrat out to Wyoming to specially investigate my case and he reported In my favor I was removed by President CLEVELAND for criticising Commls sioner SPAKK < S In toy annual report in ISMi I did net think Mr SPARKS policy just to settlers in lie west ami irunkly sad fO I am accused of illegally fencing In government land Ajudge appointed by President CLEVELAND has decided de-cided in two cases precisely I similar to mine that the fencing was not illegal and the supreme court of Wyoming has reaffirmed the decision In both cases The charge that I am a monopolist Is also untrue THE HluLlJ can say in fnor of Governor WAIWEX that he is a decidedly popular executive and we know that a good many Democrats desired his reappointment The rule is that federal officials in the territories are not liked but WAICKEX is among the very few exceptions As to the accusations that lie is a perjurer a landgrabber and a monopolist we know nothing and before believing the charges will want better evidence than the testimony testi-mony of Judge PECK |
