Show MRS I TYLERS DEATH The Tenth Presidents Widow Passes Away 4 THEEUJIORS ABOUT COMIt TANNER = Secretary Noble Does not Deny ThemWH liaai Walter Phelps IcttcrLyncheil Sullivan and Kilrain RICHMOND Va July 1 Mrs ext w President John Tyler died at the Exchange t hotel this evening from a congestive chill She had only been at the hotel since Sunday Sun-day evening and was to have left Monday to visit a son on the James river Tuesday forenoon she was taken with a congestive chill but medical ski proved of no avail and she died at a quarter past five this afternoon Mrs Tyler leaves four children Lyon G Tyler president of William and Mary college Virginia Gardiner G Tyler who lives in Charles City county Va Dr Racklan Tyler of Washington city and Mrs William Ellis of Montgomery county Julia Gardiner second wife of John Tyler tenth President of the United Stoles was born on Gardiners island near Easthampton New York in 1820 She was educated at Chegary institute New York city and after a short time spent in travel through Europe she came to Washington Wash-ington with her father in 1S40 A few ington weeks after their arrival they accepted an invitation from President Tyler to attend a pLasure excursion down the river on the war steamer Princeton The festivities on this occasion were sadly marred by the explosion of a gun on the vessel causing a loss of life Among those killed was Miss Gar diners father His body was taken to the White House and Miss Gardiner was thrown a great deal into the society of the Prsident owing t the peculiar circumstances circum-stances attending her fathers death President Tylers first wife had died shortly after he entered the White House and he paid Miss Gardiner marked attention atten-tion which resulted in their marriage in New York city June L ISH For the succeeding suc-ceeding eight months of President Tylers term she presided over the White House with tact grace and dignity After the 4th of March 1815 Mrs Tyler retired with her husband to the seclusion of their country place Sherwood Forest on the banks of the James river Virginia She remained in Virginia until after the civil war her husband having died about the beginning of the strife and then went to reside at her mothers residence on Castleton Hill Statcn island After several sev-eral years residence there she removed to Richmond Va where she died Mrs Ti leI was a Roman Catholic in religion |
