Show BLOOD IX THEIR EYES A Vigoroni Protest Asalnst a Tariff on Mexican Lead Ores The following resolutions were recently passed at El Paso on the occasion of a largo public meeting They will be interesting inter-esting reading to mining men in this section sec-tion Resolved By tho citizens of El Paso in mass meeting assembled that we look upon the attempt made t induce the sscretary of the treasury to reverse modify or change in the manner proposed and advocated advo-cated by the Colorado lead men tho long and wellestablished ruling of thetreasury department in relation to the duty on silver and lead ores as a movement in the interest inter-est of a lead trust thut its direct and immediate im-mediate result would be t paralyze the mining and smelting industries of the southwest which are just beginning to be ii int developed and air a position that requires re-quires the fostering care and strong protecting pro-tecting hand of the government against the organizers of trusts and the monopolists who are endeavoring to bring about this change Resolved That the Mexican silverlead ore question is not one of politics but a great national industrial problem affecting every portion of the United States I not only involves the admittance of Mexicos most important production into the United States but the great trade relations that exist between the two countries and its exclusion would be a serious blow to the business interests of foundries machine shops and other industrial institutions of this country that are now engaged in a prosperous and increasing trade with our sister republic Resolved That a change in the ruling as proposed would in the opinion of this meeting beau unwise and unfair discrimination discrimi-nation against the people of this section of ourcountry who have invested large sums in the mining industries Resolved That in our opinion such a change of the present ruling or the passage sage of any legislation looking 0 the shutting shut-ting out of Mexican ores would not only destroy to a great extent the mining industries in-dustries of the southwest but would also ruin our commercial and jobbing trade and inflict serious and permanent injuries upon the interests of this whole section impair i flt as3tend the success of all business and reduce the values of all real estate and land investments invest-ments Resolved That it has been the policy wisely we believe of this government to encourage in every manner possible the commerce between the United States and Mexico and we believe that i the present ruling is changed as tho Colorado lead men propose that it will in a great measure interrupt in-terrupt the friendly commercial intercourse now growing and expanding daily between the two republics Resolved That this meeting heartily indorses in-dorses the resolutions of the board of trade and common council of this city and of the Southwestern Mining association and that a copy of these resolutions be forwarded to the secretary of the treasury aid to the Congressmen of Texas New Mexico and Arizona |
