Show THE exconfederate association of Chicago is trying to raise funds for a monument over the graves of the 700 soldiers who perished while prisoners of war at Camp Douglas The Cincinnati CommcrctalGazMe a rabid Republican sheet endorses the movement saying If ever men won the right to a monument for personal valor the Confederate soldiers won it in the bloodiest and most dreadful battles known to history The CG can afford to be just now and then even to political opponents and its tribute recorded above is doubtless well meant as it is certainly deserved But is it not a little astray as to the premises Does it overlook the fact that the proposed monument monu-ment is in commemoration of the confederate confeder-ate soldiers who where not permitted to perish nobly with their brethren in the field but were held prisoners in loathsome confinement to perish one by one of hunger i privations neglect and sickness It cannot I can-not be possible that the Cincinnati luminary lumi-nary will admit there was any hard treatment treat-ment of prisoners outside the southern lines can itt |
