Show The Great London Strike LOVDOX Aug 28At a meeting of the striking dockmen this morning Burns leader of the strikers said he had heard that 4000 Belgians would be imported unless un-less the strike ended He at once tele graphed the Belgian Workingraens union and blocked that move of tho employers The strikers number 150000 The leaders express a determination to press their claims and march through the streets until the demands of the dockmen are granted A report comes from the officials of the Commercial Dock company to the eJCect hat there is a prospect of a settlement There is less intimidation and affairs gen orally have quieted down In the vicinity of St Pancras depot however there is still some excitement Many coal heavers are resuming work at advanced wages which course is violently opposed by the strikers who urge that no work be resumed until an advance is conceded to all A mob of howling strikers numbering several thousand attacked the coal vans leaving he yards under police escort They undid he chains and traces and compelled the drivers to return In a short time COOJ strikers arrivedon the scene and started for the coal yards Shippers and merchants pressing the dock companies to yiclddeclaringthat thei are driving trade to other ports The dock companies complain ol he pressure upon them and premise to give an answer later An increased in-creased number of men are at work and steamers are being loaded slowly Some of the carmen have resumed work Several ship loads of sugar are lying in the Thames unable to secure laborers All cargoes at Sreenock were bought in fifteen minutes at an advance of OJ and sent by train to London The various ports in the metropolitan dis rict are crowded with vessels hound for London which are detained pending a set tlementof the strike A monster procession proces-sion left the India docks which was swelled as it progressed by contingents of rru workers carters and cutters from Mill Wall A steamer which had been loaded by stewards and clerks from the office ol he consignees sailed today for New Zen and Other shipping houses are taking similar action The clerks however are disposed to object and arc considering the question of striking The men at Hirehes Copenhagen Oil Kills and Johnston Bros Whitekad mills have struck A leegation of wharfingers and granary gran-ary owners had a conference with he directors of the dock company today The latter discountenance the disposition evinced by the wharfingers to make a new demand thereby forcing the hands of the directors when a collapse of the strike was imminent Delegates from the coal houses visited the Coal exchange this afternoon and admitted that they had no grievance of their own but had struck on principle and would not resume work until the demands of the dockmen had been granted The merchants pointed out the injustice of this position but to no effect It is said that 100000 of Lord Durhams miners are idle by reason of the London strike Liter The dock companies show signs of yielding and have referred the questions ques-tions in dispute to a committee composed of officers of the company and delegates from the strikers A decision is expected tonight It is rumored that Norwood chairman of the joint docks committee has resigned The tea trade is pressing upon the dock companies the advisability of settling with the strikers Their overtures seem to be received favprably Burns declares that if the dock companies do not yield a compact com-pact willbe made with the wharfingers to unload the ships in mid stream |
