Show Venus and the Earth In the fundamental element of size Venus and the earth are almost alike our earth being be-ing 7000 miles in diameter and Venus 7500 The force of gravity on tho surface of the latter is very nearly ninetenths of what it is with us Its density is almost the same fraction frac-tion of that of tho earth These facts show that if transported to the surface of Venus we should feel more at home so far as some essential features of experience concerned than on any other planet known to us We ehould weigh just about ninetenths of our present weight and should find distances bearing much the same ratio to our muscular power of walking that they do in this world while in all probability tho surface rocks and earth if such bo formed there would be compacted com-pacted and constructed like thoso we daily see around us This would not be the case on planets so much smaller than tho earth as Mercury or Mars or so much larger as Jupiter Jupi-ter Saturn or Neptune Again tho year on Venus would bo about 225 days in length a good deal more liko what wo have on tho earth than is the case on any other planet In tho length of the day we should find a still more homelike experience as the difference would be imperceptible except ex-cept to careful observation Venus rotates in 23 hours 21 minutes 23 seconds and the earth in 23 hours 50 minutes 4 seconds The day of course depends a little on the motion of the sun in tho sky but the difference between be-tween this as seen on our earth and from Venus Ve-nus would not appreciably affect the similarity similar-ity of the days in each These likenesses to tho length of our day and year and to our worlds density would cause a similarity in all probability in mountain form and vegetation vege-tation In fact so far Venus is nearly tho twin sister of our world |
