Show KNIGHTS OF PYTHIAS Another Knight Who Guo His Life to Save Others Capt Edward S Nickels chief officer of the steamer Nueces and a member of Ark lodge No 1 New York city and section No 10 E R died at his fathers residence in Brookline Mass recently from tho effects of his brave struggle to save tho lives of his mates on April 7 The steamer Kueces says correspondent of The Pythian Knight left Key West April 6 and the next day encountered a terrific gale that made life in a small craft crtremely hazardous in such n son In latitude GO degs a white flag was seen flying from a schooner to the northwest The schooner proved to bo tho Alice Borda bound for New York Capt Bolger in command Chief Officer Uickels w ith four men boarded tho lifeboat from the Nueces and put off for the wreck The sea was running high and it was impossible for tho lifeboat to come near the disabled schooner and the men were obliged to jump overboard and take chances of being picked up The crew and Cfpt Mc Clain were rescued and brought on board the Nueces Officer Nickels was tho lost man to leave the lifeboat and when ho reached the deck of his vessel he became unconscious and remained re-mained so until Sunday morning when he died at his fathers residence whither he had been conveyed The deceased was born in Boston and in early life entered the merchant marine service serv-ice He was also in the employ of the Pacific Pa-cific Mail Steamship company and the Brazilian Bra-zilian Steamship company and by faithful services he became chief officer of the steamer I Nueces of the New York and Texas Steamship Steam-ship company |
