Here is a criticism of Bicycle News on the American party Of the thirty tourists quite a third must be under twentyone years of age the youngest being sixteen and the oldest member of the party is fifty one Most are quietly disposed with occasionally occa-sionally a suggestion of dryness in their manner but all are gentlemanly and all right when you know them How is this for a clincher as to the merits of two different makes of bicycles A prominent dealer here in arguing with a prospective buyer springs the following Whj there was one of our safeties stolen the other day and it was standing beside a safety at the time but the thief being a judge of wheels took our make and left the other proving beyond the shadow of a doubt the superiority of our wheel Next I Chicago correspondent L A W Bulletin The following from the L A W Bulletin will inspire in Salt Lake wheelmen a do sire to visit Florida A natural race course of forty miles is something we dont come across in Utah every day A valued correspondent cor-respondent from JacksonvilLe Fla writes us as follows Just think of a straightaway straight-away road for forty miles as smooth and hard as almost any race track That is what we Floridians in this vicinity have in the way of a track Only forty minutes ride from Jacksonville we have a little summer resort called Pabloby the Sea ind stretching eight miles on one side and hirt two on the other we have one of the finest beaches in America and at all times rideable being from 100 feet to 300 yards wide and as hard as one can imagine Think of that for a course I We have some very promising riders Lampkin did on Decoration Day five miles with ten dead turns and half the course against the wind in 1710 on a roadster If the fact of this beautiful track of beach were known I think a great many wheelmen would be induced in-duced to bring their wheels along when they came south in the winter We have aLe a-Le gue club here of some twentysix members mem-bers A party of wheelmen will leave Boston about Tuly 1st bj boat to Halifax N Sand S-and thence bj wheel to Annapolis a distance dis-tance of about a hundred and fifteen miles over most excellent roads At Halifax from July 5th to Julj 10th a summer carnival car-nival of outdoor sports will be held audits audit-s the purpose of the wheelmen to take this in The w heolmen of Halifax will take the visitors in hand and look after them during dur-ing their stay in that city The Cambridge port Mass club have the matter in charge and are anxious to have wheelmen from New England New York Washington Washing-ton Philadelphia and in fact from allover over the countr join them It will be a most delightful trip and the valley of the Annapolis is famed the world over for its beauty The carnival at Halifax will boone bo-one of all kinds of outdoor sports and the military and naval displays by the British garrison and fleet will be a novel feature The regular fare to and from Halifax by boat is about ten dollars but it is hoped to get a reduction from these prices Wheels ridden by excursionists will be admitted into Nova Scotia free of duty on personal bond being given that they be taken back into the United States A slim attendance at the cycling club run Monday last was no drawback to the pleasure of a spin to Liberty park Good roads bracing air and a few companions to enliven the time with conversation generally gener-ally insures a pleasurable run and the one of Monday was no exception During the stop at Liberty park a burlesque race between be-tween two star riders one on a crank safety and the other on a lever safety caused any amount of amusement The crank rider shot out ahead for the first few rods and got up good speed when the mann > man-n the lever safety seeing his laurels as a bad man on the track fast fading awaj raised his powerful foot as high up as his shoulders and made a succession of six foot strokes which soon brought him even with his doughty opponent who by this time in imminent danger of slipping a pedal could not increase his speed and was badly distanced tanced The defeated rider claimed to be he best man attributing his failure to the superior running qualities of te other wheel but that sort of claim didnt go with the spectators who voted the lever safety man the champion long stroke A return home just at dusk completed one of the worst attended but at the same time most enjoyable of the club runs |
