Show Mass Meeting at Lelii According to previous notice the citizens of Lehi assembled in mass meeting meet-ing on Tuesday evening February 28 1833 and organized by electing T R Cutler Esq chairman and John Woodhoose secretary The chairman stated the object of the meeting by calling attention to our previous meeting when we had decided to petition the Legislature to enact the necessary legislation to establish an experimental station and agricultural college one or both and thus make available to us the various appropriations appropria-tions made by Congress for the various states and territories Lehi was the first to move and call attention to this Congressional legislation which seemed to have escaped the notice of other places and even of the members of our Legislature Lehi had made in her former petition an offer of about 2000 to aid in the establishment of said station or college but since toe movement move-ment had been started and our offer made other plates notably Bpanisn Fork aad vicinity nad also made otters being greater in amount man ours althouRii evidently their facilities notably late water ud rail roads were not so gOOd The question for this meeting to decide was whether woleave our offer as at first made or whether we are willing to do something more and thus keep abreast at least of other places in oar laudable tempts to secure se-cure the location her Odr committee appointed to present the petition had not yet made a report to a full meeting of citizens but to a session of the Farmers Far-mers Club It might be in order for them to mtike a report to this meeting Israel Evans Eq in behalf of the < ommitteereporls tUat thev had preen ted tha petition to the LegislatureHe lal pisuiiaUy visited the Governor and m my inetnbsM of the Legislature also me newspapers and whilst acknowledged acknowl-edged an oversight in not having before noticed the subject all expressed themselves them-selves willing and anxious that something some-thing be done so that Utah might have J the advantages intended by Congress in common with other states and territories terri-tories Since presenting the petition they had corresponded with other states ana territories which had availed themselves them-selves of the various acts of Congress Some had generously responded by sending us copies of their own laws organizations which had been furnisheo to the members of the committee on agriculture to aid them in drafting a law for us There is one thing more might be done to aid in this work namely to suggest an appropriation to visit several of the most likely places that have their colleges already established estab-lished and learn the best of plans locations lo-cations workings etc so that no mistakes mis-takes be made in Utah And as some other places had gone beyond us in their offers in aid of this object he suggested that we at least place ourselves alongside along-side of them in that uatter If we did i that and the certainty that our facilities facili-ties were better than theirs we no doubt will stand a fair chance of having the location here at Lehi He also referred re-ferred to our great facilities for fish culture which also could be made a branch of the experiment George Webb Esq another membe r of the committee spoke confirrmn g Mr Evans report and also referred t o F l |
