Show For the iu lic Library I One of the most worthy institutions I in this city has had merely a languishing I languish-ing existence for several years past on I account of the meagre support it has i received from the citizens of what we often boast as being a live progressive town and the only reason that it lives at all to day can be found In the indefatigable inde-fatigable philanthropic labors of the persistent ladies constituting the members mem-bers of the Womens Christian Temperance Temper-ance Union We doubt if any person can be found who would have the temerity te-merity to say that the public library and free reading room is an institution which should be allowed to languish any longer in the manner which bas been characteristic of it in the past It is certainly a disgrace to our happy burg that a library of much more elegant proportions than the present one has not been founded and maintained long since and it is a burning shame that oven the present modest one should be so scantily supported This is not the first time has fallen to our lot to make mention of the necessity for increased support of the subject of this article and we hope not to be found tiring of advocating the claims of a public library until one is organized which will be a credit to the cityand in harmony with the other evidences of civilization which mark our town Tomorrow and Tuesday evenings an opportunity will be afforded the people to substantially patronize in a tinancal way the worthy ladies in their efforts to provide healthy literature for the people who are not in Ii position to purchase books for themselves Under the efficient direction of Prof Bixler a class has recently been organized for instruction in vocal music and the members have reached such perfection I as to be adjudged capable by Mr Bixler I to give public entertainments and they will present a miscellaneous programme tomorrow and Tuesday evenings which cannot fail to take with the people peo-ple and result in placing a goodly sum into the coffers of the managers of the library In addition to solos duets etc a chorus of fifty voices will render some choice selections Tickets are 50 cents and there is no extra charge made for reserve seats In making up your social engagements do not forget the entertainments on Monday and Tuesday evenings |
