future course of Chief Arthur Ar-thur Should a reasonable excuse be found for it on any one of the western roads the Brotherhood men will probably prob-ably be called out It is believed by many that every western road is liable to render the strict neutrality construction construc-tion to have its men taken off by Tuesday Tues-day morning Officers of the Brother nood now admit that nothing satisfactory satis-factory will come of their order to the engineers and firemen of the Reading road to quit worK and dispatches from the east this morning confirm the belief Only about thirty 01 the Reading men were induced to go back to their homes At the Burlington office it was not thought the Brotherhood would carryout carry-out the threat to call off engineers and nrenien on other roads or received Notice was issued this evening that I I the companys freight houses in this I city will be opened Monday for the reception re-ception of merchandise for stations in Illinois only and it is desired that shipments for points not reached by any other road be delivered The notice says We expect to make reasonably reason-ably prompt delivery bnt time will not be as good as ordinarly Chiefs Arthur and Sargent are not very hopeful of any good coming from their request to the Brotherhood on the Reading road to step out They are confident however that there are not enough idle engineers in the east to materially assist the Burlington and that the road will arrive at the limit of its resources within a few days They expressed the belief this evening that they had the whip hand on the strikers but do not expect ex-pect there will be many developments until Monday when the chairmen of the various grievance committees get together To keep up the spirits of strikers a circular letter was sent out today signed by Arthur and Sargent I complimenting the men on their firm stand and devotion to the people and i I duty and expressing the him belief I that their cause will triumph Mr Arthur was this evening handed a copy of a telegram which was sent this afternoon by twelve Reading engineers en-gineers to their master workman in Philadelphia saying We are on our way back stop the boys GrandMaster Grand-Master Sargent showed to the Associated Asso-ciated Press renresentative telecram from many western points > showing that the men are standing firm and are confident con-fident of ultimate victory Chief Engineer Arthur had not heard of the tragedy at Brookfield Mo in which Bridge Foreman Bostwick fatally shot John Roxy a Brotherhood engineer en-gineer until shown the Associated Press dispatch to night When it was read to him Mr Arthur seemed affected His eyes dropped to the floor and after a minuted study he said 4 Im sorry deeply sorry I deprecate violence of any sort for there nothing to be gained by it The instructions given to our agents who left htad quarters for outlying points were to be particularly careful to request our men to stay away from company property so that just such trouble a this would be averted This was supplemented by a telegram of the same tenor to the Brotherhood on the Burlington system r cannot discuss the case further for I have received no official advice about it nAt 4 nm a special train of three coaches left the Union Depot carrying westward 110 men said to be tried engineers en-gineers and firemen They marched over
