Show TRY IT It would be worth the while of the propertyowners of two or three of the more valuable blocks in the centre of the city to assess themselves and pave the street and sidewalks Suppose that Main Street from South Temple to Third South were smoothly paved with either wood or stone or macadamized or laid in asphaltum that the sidewalks were even and regular in grade and laid in some good material as sandstone flags patent stone or cement that the ditches were of cnt stone similar to those around the Temple blok and so arranged that they would drain both the sidewalks and the street how much would it add to the value of the property in the six I blocks It would cost a good deal of money to make this improvement but for every dollar so expended five would be added to the saleable value of tho frontage The people and the traffic traf-fic would go to that street is spit of eflorts to take it away If there were three blocks without mud holes and sloppy lakes the shoppers would find them if there were six blocks of even sidewalks along which the pedestrian was not compelled to keep his eyes to the ground to avoid I falling into chuckholes or stumbling over projections people would gather to them and they would not turn to other streets and sidewalks to wallow in mud and slush and pick their way over ridges through holes among protruding pro-truding planks all interspersed with patches of mud mining gravel and cobbles Suppose the suggested improvements were made along First or Second South Streets how long would East Temple retain its popularity and prestige as the first business thoroughfare in the city Only until the improvement was completed com-pleted There is an abundance of the very best material for pavements and sidewalks side-walks within easy rerch and it can be obtained at comparatively small cost It is cause for wonder that the landowners land-owners do not combine among them selve and without waiting for the notion no-tion of the City Council go 10 work and boom their own preporty and help the town |
