Show The Rio Grande Extension Work on the Rio Grande extension down the Grande from Glenwood is progressing very rapidly a large force of men being engaged in grading and laying track The gadng bridge over the Grand is completed and the rails are laid and a large yard is being graded just bevond four tracks being laid for a distance of nearly a mile Graders are at work from that point to Newcastle and the greater portion of this distance is now ready for the ties and rails as soon as the connecting portions of the roadbed are graded The extension as now deemed on says the Denver News will be twenty seven miles long extending from Glenwood to the mies long Rifle creek Little or no work has been done beyond Newcastle The road follows the course of the Grand river very closely Some time ago it was stated that there was likely to be trouble between the Midland and the Rio Grande but this is erroneous for the Midland route west from Glenwood as contemplated at present runs up Elk creek and across the hill to a point on Rifle creek the exact survey west of that place not yet having been made public A noticeable feature of the new track bong bo-ng laid by the Rio Grande is that broad gauge ties are used the switch rods and head rods are all made to accommodate a third rail and the cuts and curves are all being constructed with a view that shortly broadgauge trains will be run over these racks This is the case on all the track west of Lcadville and it is authoritatively stated that the intention of the company is to broadgauge the track from Ca on City the present western terminus of the third rail through to Glenwood and as far west as the track extends It is also designed to extend the line to Grand Junction or some other point in western Colorado I a satisfactory satis-factory arrangement is made with the Rio Grande Western the line will be to Grand Junction otherwise if the Rio Grande can raise the funds the line will be over an undetermined un-determined route west to Salt Lake City The man line west will at any rate be via LeadviJIp and Glenwood and it will be broadgauge In this way the fearful climb over Marshall pass will be avoided and much state easier grades will be had across the |
