Show STARTING THE FAIR The Exhibition of 1889 to Far Surpass All Previous Shows ALL IS ON TIME AND OX DECK Spicy Talk of Colonel Wmler Good Feeling of the Citizens First Installment of Special Premiums The territorial fair is next October Yes Well this is only March Arent you starting in with your preparations rather early earlyNot Not a bit of it replied President John R Winder of tho Deseret Agricultural and Manufacturing society yesterday The fact is we are on time this year but net a day too soon Our supervisors aro at work preparing tho premium list and we expect it will be ready for the printer in a very short time Then the people may know what they are expected to compete for and they will have plenty of time to prepare their exhibits Last year owing to a variety of drawbacks the premium list was terribly delayed and the exhibition successful as it was showed haste and lack of caroB caro-B thus taking time by the forelockfwe not only make it easier for the board who have the management of the fair but we make it easier for exhibitors and insure a a better class of exhibits I shall be greatly mistaken if the coming fair docs not eclipse anything of the kind ever attempted in Utah or the surrounding territories if it does not surprise and astonish even its friends I judge this from the immense interest being evinced in regard to it already You know once upon a time when the society held a fair if the board did not go into a mans orchard and pick his fruit for him and carry it to the fair the exhibition exhibi-tion would languish and in all probability would be a failure There you neednt laugh that is literally true sir Themem hers of the old board will bear me out in tho statement that we did that and I remember re-member well how we always had to borrow our art exhibition off the walls of our well todo citizens But the times have changed Last year was the beginning of a Ir era stated lew fair em and this year as tho prospects tare great for an event that vill be a credit to us and who can calculae the amount of good it will do I tell you the impetus which these exhibitions give to our home industries is something that people peo-ple as a rule do not correctly estimate but that it abundantly pays all tho trouble and all the expense of the undertaking I am convinced vinced Our annual fairs we intend to told them annually hereafter will be one of the most powerful agencies for bringing Utah producers into prominence that can be imagined Let them once get established and let their fame travel abroad and it will be found that tourists who contemplate a visit to Utah will be found postponing their trip till about the time of the fair In agricultural cultural pursuits our territory is really very far in advance of her sisters but in the past she has not perhaps put her foot forward for-ward because of a lack of encouragement In times gone by I have seen at I exhibitions of our society which were gotten up without any particular pains and in great haste men of prominence from abroad who expressed the greatest astonishment at the excellence and diversity divers-ity of the display I may be an enthusiast on the subject but if wo want to advance in the industrial arts I know the holding of annual fairs will facilitate our progress not only by the interchange of ideas and the diffusion of knowledge but by tho exciting of competition and the life of trade which follows Dont you believe the last fair was the means of impelling tho farmer to raise better crops the breeder to improve his live stock the manufacturer to make better articles I do and this year look to see a wholesome growth in all the material interests of the territory Already we are in receipt of a number of special premiums and no one factor connected with past exhibitions ex-hibitions has contributed more to their success suc-cess than tho same special premiums Following is a partial list of the offers to date with expressions of the donors concerning cerning the fair At tho head of the list is Colonel Winder himself who evidently believes be-lieves in practicing what he preaches SBVETYFlE DOLLR CAIP I beg to offer as a
