Show THE CROAKERS The men who arc finding so much fault with Salt Lake because of its alleged lack of progress belong to that class known the world over as chronic grumblers They are largely if not exclusively of the irresponsible ir-responsible nonpropertyowning class They have no interest in the city except of a speculative character and would be bettor bet-tor pleased with Oshkosh or Squedunk if cither of these offered better opportunitie for making more money without the investment invest-ment of capital If you will inquire in-quire as to the standing of the men who stand on the street corners and grumble over tho slowness and the old fogy ways of Salt Lake you will find their enterprise consists in doing nothing themselves and telling others what to do If you could learn concerning the men who are blackguarding the citizens of Salt Lake through the newspapers you would know that tho writers are either eager to make a stake from other peoples capital or very careful of their own money spending none of it for tho general gen-eral good except when the individual return is large and satisfactory You dont hear any of the bona fide citizens the men whoso permanent homes are here and who havo property croaking about lack of progress about the city standing still about keeping back the boom and so on These gentlemen see that the growth of Salt Lake is about as rapid as it can be with safety Steady and healthy progress is more to them than tho temporary tem-porary spurts which enrich a few speculators specula-tors and are followed by periods of depression depres-sion during which all must suffer When these gentlemen see that there is a demand for an improvement they proceed to comply as Mr CULLEK did by tho erection of a fine hotel a year or two ago as the Messrs AUBHBACII and SCOTT did last year by putting put-ting up the magnificent structure on East Temple street as others havo done and are doing all the time as Messrs AUMSTUONO and McCusB are doingin putting in a costly electric plant for their street railway ser Tice Most of these improvements are abreast of the times if not ahead of them Careful observers believe tho street car improvement im-provement is from three to sir years in adS ad-S vance of the citys requirements If wisdom wis-dom shall convince that the town will support another such block as the Scorr AUKRBACH structure another one will ha erected not by tho jawbone of the corner croakers and speculative boomers but by the cass and cralitof the coolheaded calculating cal-culating men who are interested not alone in the growth of Salt Lake but in the solidity sol-idity and good reputation of the city One grows weary of the plaints of the impecunious adventurers and tired of hearing hear-ing them tell the solid substantial citizens that the latter stand in the way of progress It is oppressive to listen to a fellow who came here last month with no more money than will pay for his meals and lodging a single quarter telling a citizen of twenty years that if he will sell his lot he will get out of the way of tho law of progress or if he will borrow money and erect a stately pile of brick and mortar he will at once be rich and the town will boom The fact is the croakers to the contrary Salt Lake is progressing and is going ahead just as fast as it is safe for her to go Houses are erected to satisfy the demand and people are coming in when there is anything any-thing for them to do If there were employment em-ployment for twenty thousand hands more than are here twentyfive thousand would be here within three months If five thousand more dwelling houses and five hundred more stores were required the demand would be supplied in short order and by the very men who are denounced as blocks in front of the wheels of progress |
