Show GOOD FOR HARRISON President HARRISON has made up his mind that FRED D GIUNT by courtesj styled colonel is not exactly the man to send to China as the United States minister minis-ter The Presidents mind has doubtless been made up as to this matter all along but it took him some time to summon the courage to say to the influential men politicians politi-cians and millionaires who were urging GRANTS nomination what he knew should be said H UIRISOX is to be admired even applauded for refusing under the circumstances circum-stances It takes stamina to make a stand in such a case GRANTS appointment was pressed by some influential and some good men whose displeasure an administration cannot desire to incur That these men are misguided that their judgment is warped by a sentiment is plain enough yet tho gentlemen themselves cannot or will not see it in that way There arc onohundred thousand men in the United States better qualified to represent repre-sent this government at the capital of China than Colonel GRANT and any one of them is as much entitled to tho honor the trustand the emoluments as the gentleman named His fitness for the place lies in the single fact that ho is the son of his father Were he the son of anybody else who would ever think of him in connection with this or any other important office In this democratic land the son of General GRANT is no more than the son of any other reputable oitizen Brains and character char-acter aro what count and the people do not recognize theso as hereditary They aro not transmitted from father to son If they were Secretary BLAINB one of the brainiest and most brilliant men in the Republic would not now havo a son working work-ing in a Maine machineshop for 7 per week General GRANT was a great man and his achievements were mighty hut he failed to transmit any considerable part of his genius to his offspring his sons being of the very ordinary type of men The Chinese admired GRANT because he was great and they would probably despise the son because ho is insignificant There is no place in our diplomatic service which demands more ability more skill and more real statesmanship than in the mission mis-sion to China It is not a place for boys or amateurs We are glad that President HARRISOX has had the courage to bury sentiment and give common sense a chance in this matter If it is necessary to provide pro-vide for Colonel GRANT put him in a place that will fit |
