Show CLEVELAND AKD UTAH If President Cleveland should fail to mention Utah in his inaugural address or il mentioning the Territory should be sane and reasonable in his suggestions sugges-tions regarding the local problem wouldnt there be a frantic yell of dis pair by the howlers who are counting so much on the new Presidents decided opposition to the Mormons THE HERALD has authority for saying that whatever may be President Clevelands courseas to the problem privately I has very decided views regarding the I matters thai have been the subject of so much legislation litigation and trouble during the period that Republicans Republi-cans have had control of thenation The Presidentelect is not less opposed to polygamy than Republican Executives have shown themselves to be but as he has a higher regard for the Constitution than some of his predecessors have displayed dis-played it is believed that his methods meth-ods strict and vigorous as they may be will yet be lawful and regular There is no occasion for a reference to the Mormons in the inaugural address and it is thought that no mention will bs made of the Saints in that speech The party platform plat-form is silent on the allimnortant matter mat-ter to the people of Utah though a great effort was made to have an anti Mormon plank inserted The best wisdom wis-dom of the party decided against a reference to the question which the Republicans had ever claimed to be i their own affair and Mr Cleveland can consistently disregard it in an address which is intended more as a popular acceptance ac-ceptance of the office than as a formal declaration of the policy that will be pursued His suggestions and recommendations properly pro-perly belong to his messages to Congress If the Democracy in its national convention con-vention could afford to refraiu from saying anything a subject that was brought prominently before it the President Pre-sident can afford at least to be silent until the time arrives for him to do something which is not now We sincerely hope Mr Cleveland Cleve-land will have in his address next Wednesday Wed-nesday no reference to Utah not that such reference would affect matters herein the least but its absence would prove a sore disappointment to a class who are bent on seeing the mischievous work now being done > prosecuted to ruinous results |
