Show 1 ARTHURS APPOINTEES President Arthur will have to do all his appointing to office during the two remaining days of his term It is probable prob-able that he has already gotten through with the business there being no more vacancies to fill The course of the resident with reference to the Federal offices during the past few weeks has been anything but commendable Until after the election of his successor Arthur was one of the slowest Pres idents to fill the offices incumbents holding over for months and in some instances in-stances years without being disturbed but ever since he realized that a Democrat Demo-crat would follow him his effort has been to leave no vacancy to be filled by his successor the apparent idea being that his appointees ap-pointees would be undisturbed until the i expiration of their terms and he would hamper Cleveland by getting in as many Republicans as possible Fortunately For-tunately the civil service act applies to very few of those appointees who can be removed at the will of the President If Cleveland does not make a scattering among the dry bones and a general i cleanup he will be ungrateful to the men who make him President and will excite such a buzzing about his head that will distract even as big a man as Mr Cleveland The people said the rascals mustbe turned out and to Mr Cleveland they assigned the duty of seeing the order obeyed When the appointing machinery gets fairly in motion the men who have been given place during the last hours of Arthurs administration will want to kick themselves for having accepted office in the vain hope of holding on to the detriment of the Democracy |
