Show THE PRIZE DRILL DeMolay Commamlery Wins the First Prize The Fancy St Bernards are Eaily Left San Francisco 20The competitive compet-itive Knights Templar drill took place this afternoon at Bay D strict I park Long before the beginning of the exercises the grand stand with a seating cap city of 3000 wae crammjJ to its utmost and there were 10010 more in the inclosure below Only three commandfr rieB eoinpetid the lisper of lr dianapolr DeAIoIay of Louisville Lou-isville kud bamt Bernard oi Chicago Bih drilled with twentyseven men except the St Bernard who ouly drilled with twentyfive Forty mine tea time was allowed each drill The Pacific coast cqmmanderies lefrained from competing preferring that the prizs abould bewun by eastern Knigntt wnom iney regarded as guests I There were five prizes in all vary I ing in value from 84000 to 8500 A rule was made by the triennial committee that the prize should oecome the absolute property of the winners and not subjtct to further fur-ther competition There were three judges all < llicfers oL the army The tactics comprised sword extr cises mill hry evolutions and Templar movements First to appear ap-pear in the Hits were the Rapers of Indianapolis the privilege ot the last drill being conceded to the t Bernards of Chicago A t 12 oclock sharp they advanced accompanied by the band of the First united States uavalry to the northern conilnes of the drill grounds return to the judges stand and wheeling into line gave a salute This was the signal lor a great burst of cheering in which the competing commauderies heartily heart-ily joined The drill was excellently performed The wheeling wheel-ing and marching by threes were very much admired but in moving to the buglbd call they made a cuuple of bad breaks calling call-ing faith a sorrowful llAh 1 from thtt crowd and jeopardising their claim to the first prize The Hapers were followed by the iJeilolays who as they maiched in stately column to the front of the judges stand len bv Eighteenth United States Infantry hand weie received with great cheers Their drill was watchtd v dl maiked attention some of the mOle intricate movements move-ments eliciting great applause They drilled Hkn old veterans After them came the St Bernards with the Lyon and Healy Clucigo band and were greeted by the immense crowd with a continuous burst of applause Their salute to the judges was the signal for renewed cheering kept up until they began their exercises exer-cises During the first five minutes they drilled with marked precision after which their drill was completely com-pletely marred by one unfortunate knight who persisted in always getting get-ting where he was not wanted Before the drill was half over it became evident that the first prize would lay between the DeMolays and llapers the unfortunate breaks of the St Bernards depriving them of that hope When they retired to their tents the applause was tremendous tre-mendous clearly showing in which direction sympathies of the people peo-ple were At the conclusion of the drill the tents of the three competing compet-ing counmanderies were surrounded by knights and ladies who gave them quite an ovation The decision decis-ion of the judges will be made known this eyenitg at the Pavilion Calculations show that in addition addi-tion to the 10000 subscribed by the public for the triennial conclave California commanderies have spent out pf their own pockets 130000 ia entertaining the visitors San Francisco Lodga spent 10000 and Dewitt Clinton of Virginia Nev the same amount St Bernard commandery leaves tomorrow afternoon by special train going by the Central Pacific Union Pacific and Chicago Burlington Burling-ton Sj t Qinncy route The judges refused to make known their decision until this evening at the Pavilion At 930 the prizes were awarded TeMolays taking the first and choosing the Miners vase always spoken of as the fourth prize Raper second chose the onyx column i St Bernard third chose the silver globe The remaining remain-ing two prizes were retained and will be competed for next year at the tournament of State command eries Surprise is expressed at the selection made by the DeMolays The intrinsic value is Si 000 less than the column chosen by the Ilapers |
