Show Layton Ends Up And Down Year By DAVE WIGHAM LAYTON -- Last week the basketball season came to a close for the Layton team as they bowed out of the state tournament with a couple of losses, one to East and the other to Kearns. This was a season which began in uncertainty uncer-tainty for the Lancers. THEY weren't sure what type of club they would have returning to battle in the newly aligned Region One. Gone were the big names like Johny Gilbert and Cal j Roberts. The guard line was back from the previous year but the search was on for the big people to play the forward positions. Coach Doug Moon had some good prospects, it would just be a matter of time to see which one fit best in what position. After all that's what coaching is all about isn't it? FROM the pack, following some experimenting, the trio of Brandon Flint, Rory Dixon and Gordon Anderson appeared. Flint was a starter as a sophomore the year before, they knew he could play in any league. Dixon was a great jumper who could shoot from the outside. Then came the surprise of the year for the Lancers in the play of Anderson, a slender 65" junior. Anderson came in and did a great job of rebounding and scoring for the Lancers and things started start-ed to fall into place when he came around and became a permanent fixture in the starting lineup. GUARDS tike Carl Woodward, Wood-ward, Ben Bubak and Rick Snow are tough to find, and to have all three on the same side is a great asset. If one or the other is off or in foul trouble then the other one can fill in. Woodward was the best shot of the three while Bubak and Snow liked to use their quickness for the penetrating drives. SO AS the league opened up the word was that Layton could play with anyone on a given night. The first couple of weeks turned into a yo-yo act for the Layton crew as they seemed to win every other game. FIRST they lost to Roy then they beat Bonneville, then they dropped a close game to Weber but bounced back to beat Viewmont. Entering their first game with rival Clearfield the Lancers were 2-2 and playing inconsistent ball while the Falcons were on top of their game. The result was a twenty point win for Clearfield. Clear-field. THE Lancers were still thinking about that loss the following week as they traveled to Bountiful to battle the Braves, the result was another loss for them. They salvaged enough pride the next week to down the Sky View club and finish the first round of league action with a 3-4 mark, not indicative of the type of team they had. The second half of the league wars started out the same way it had a month earlier as they lost to Roy then beat Bonneville. WEBER then downed them and then came the game that seemed to turn the Lancers around. They went to Viewmont View-mont and lost a one-pointer in a great contest. Following that Friday game Coach Moon let his troops know that he felt they weren't playing up to their potential and to take a couple of days off from basketball to decide whether or not they wanted to play. The results were overwhelming as the Lancers came on strong to win their final three games including a win over Clearfield with a dramatic last second tip-in by Anderson. SO THE Lancers finished league play with a 7-7 mark, good enough for fourth place. There were some good moments for them as individuals in-dividuals and as a team. The guards should get some offers, Snow is being recruited recruit-ed more for football as is Bubak. Woodward is a good junior college prospect, he handles the ball well and can shoot with anyone. THE UP front people are young, Flint and Anderson will be back. Dixon is a good high school player, he can jump with the best of them, he could surprise some college scouts if given the chance. |
