Frandsen: From SCOUTER • A l area from the south end of the Salt Lake Valley to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. "Scouting is set up with a host of volunteers," said Frandsen. "Each district has a professional scouter and two volunteers: a commissioner and a chairman. Multiple ' districts make up a Council, and then Council leadership is set up the same way." The Boy Scouts occasionally hold activities that affect an entire Council — Jamborees, for example. Frandsen says there are at least three such celebrations coming up for the Boy Scout Centennial Celebration in 2010. Even more than these activities, however, the Commissioner is in charge of helping each scouting unit be successful in their aims of service. The Aims of scouting are to teach values, citizenship, and physical fitness to the young men involved. "I believe in Scouting because I've seen the difference it makes in boys," Frandsen said. "It helps them learn to follow through with their goals, and to make good choices. It helps them learn honesty and loyalty, and it helps them form a habit of giving back to the community.1' Frandsen clearly believes in giving back to the community himself. Last fall, he was honored with scouting's highest adult leader award, the Silver Beaver. Frandsen is also an active Rotarian, and serves on the board of Payson's Mountain In the stone age people lived in caves, used rocks for tools, and killed the occasional lingering dinosaur with their bare hands! Worse yet, there was little to no reading material. And community newspapers? Forget about it! But take heart, dear reader! WE ARE NO LONGER IN THE STONE AGE! Civilization is all the rage, wits are seldom necessary, and you can download MP3 files to your heart's content. True, the need to slay the occasional dinosaur still rears its ugly head now and then, but look on the bright side: We now have the SPANISH FORK NEWS - good reading material and a community newspaper all in one. What more could you want? (Of course, some people still prefer the Flintstone look.) Frandsen's favorite scouting memories come from his time as Scoutmaster. He loves working with individuals and watching them get excited about the things they are learning. "One time we were on a campout learning about the Fremont Indians," Frandsen said. "One of the boys said to me on the way home. 'I think I could be an archaeologist!' It was so fun to watch this new window open for him — something he had never seen himself doing before, suddenly he could imagine it in his future. That's the kind of growth I really enjoyed seeing through Scouting." |
