Show How to Avoid Spanish Influenza; I Disease Is Spreading, Look Out j i . YVTH e epidemic of Spanish influen2a reaching virtually every part j of the United States and continuing with no apparent signs of i abatement, a few hints on prophylaxis, or the prevention of disease, will not j only aid in checking the spread of this newest malady, but, if followed, i will aid in preventing many other diseases. j In Spanish influenza, simple colds, pneumonia in fact, in any disease : there is putrefaction going on somewhere in the intestinal tract, producing S j in autotoxemia, or self-poisoning, which lowers the vitality to such a degree that the subject is liable to contract any disease. I The following rules, if followed, will go a long way toward assuring j good health: j Above all things, encourage bowel action every day not with drugs, j but by proper diet, hygiene and exercise. See that all the organs of the body are performing their proper functions func-tions the bowels, kidneys, pores of the skin and lungs. If the bowels do not act one day, stop eating until they do act. Avoid eating too fast, overeating ajid eating, when not hungry. Keep your office and home thoroughly ventilated by having a current of air passing through the rooms. Get fresh air every minute you live, by avoiding overheated and crowded places. Avoid all excesses. Do not go automobiling or out in the chilly air after a bath. Take your I baths at night and go immediately to bed. I Do not keep the body too warm, either in your dressing or with too heavy bedclothes. Avoid condiments and highly seasoned foods. Take a long walk and do some deep breathing daily. Sun your bedclothes, and, if possible, your mattress, every day. Avoid getting chilled, and, if you do, instead of taking whisky, take ! some active exercise and deep breathing until warm. ! Eat sparingly of meat, and in very hot weather eat only fruit. ! Do not eat too many starchy foods. ' Drink plenty of good water. j Eat a good combination salad at least twice a day, and plenty of lettuce, celery and spinach. Thoroughly insalivate your foods, particularly those of the starchy variety. It is the ptyalin in the saliva that digests the starches. Eat your meals at regular hours if you are hungry, and if not hungry at I mealtime, miss that meal. ! Do not procrastinate in the calls of nature. Answer nature s calls lm- mediately, as serious harm is done by not doing so. I If you feel a cold coming on, give it immediate attention by taking a I hot bath, cleansing the intestinal tract of all putrefaction and stop eating. The cold will soon disappear. ' Get that old saying, 'Teed a cold and starve a fever, out of your I head. In all probability the man who was guilty of that fallacy was the I same one who advocated putting dusty cobwebs on a wound to stop the bleeding. Stop eating whether you have a cold or a fever, cleanse the bowels thoroughly, take a bath, keep your body warm, your room well ventilated and you will find these the very best therapeutic measures you can adopt. . 1 -vr V |
