Show LEOPARDS BEAT TOOELE IN EXCITING HOOP GAME; WIN TOURNAMENT PLACE Two Extra Periods of Five Minutes Required to Break Tie; Final. Score Is 37 to 35.' THE East high Leopards took the Tooele hoopsters Into camp yesterday yes-terday afternoon at the Deseret gymnasium in what was unquestionably unques-tionably the best contest ever staged between state high school teams this year. The game was so closely fought that it was necessary to play two additional five-minute periods in order to finally decide the winner. The final score was 37 to 35 for the hilltoppers. By winning yesterday's fray, the East high boys eliminated the strong Tooele quint from the race for the pennant, and incidentally assured themselves of a place in the state tournament next week. . The Leopards .will be the second team represented repre-sented from the Salt Lake division in the meet, the Bingham five being the other quint to go. Floyd Romney started the scoring for the eastsiders yesterday by dropping in two field goals in quick succession. Another An-other basket,! this, time by Neil Smith, gave the Leopards a six-point lead, which they managed to hold for about five minutes. min-utes. It was then that the visitors hit their stride. They soon tied the score, and, despite the fact that the local players did their beat to stem the tide, Coach Barlow's men found themselves on the long end of a l7-to-13 score at the end of the half. G. Gillespie and Parks were the big scorers for the visitors during this period. : Although they had a little hard luck in. finding the hoop at the start of the game, they soon succeeded in getting the correct cor-rect line on the basket, and led the East high guards a merry chase. Romney and Smith, -for the East high, were right on the job throughout the period, scoring whenever the chance offered. G. Gillespie started the scoring In the first half with a neat field basket. Nothing Noth-ing daunted by this, the Leopards sailed right into the fray with the grim determination deter-mination to overcome the six-point lead and they did. It was a hard fight, but they persevered, and soon had the score tied at nineteen. Both teams battled along on fairly even terms until the end of the period. The Leopards ' were ' two points shy of the twenty-eight garnered by Tooele when but thirty seconds of time were left, but a nifty shot by Mickey Oswald tied the count, thus making necessary .the playing of an additional period of five minutes. It soon developed that one five-minute period was not enough, for each team managed to score a field basket and a foul pitch before time was called, leaving the score tied at 1-all. Oswald opened up the second extra period by a- clever shot from the sideline, which was followed by another basket, this time by Douglas Beatie, from the middle of the floor. This last shot proved the undoing of Tooele, for a field basket by Parks near the end of the period was the only scoring which the visitors had time for. The final whistle found the Tooele five playing hard to get another field goal, but all in vain. The East high school held an athletic assembly in the school auditorium yesterday yes-terday in order to raise the spirit for the East high-Tooele contest. Several members mem-bers of 1 the basketball team made speeches. ' Coach Tommy Fitzpatrick of the "U" was the main speaker of the occasion oc-casion and said the chances of the East high for the championship were good. After the game about 200 East high students stu-dents participated in a snake danceon the main thoroughfare, celebrating their victory vic-tory over the visitors. Lineup and summary: EAST HIGH. Fd.G.
