Show CROP THE BEST IN y A FRUIT GROWERS WILL RECEIVE BIG RETURNS farmers though suffering in beets and tomatoes are prospering i from fridays standard by the middle of next week the shipment of utah peaches will bo in full swing and the crop that tah year was expected to bo small if not an entire failure will be on its way to the eastern markets to the rains of tho past few weeks ane horticulture ests owe the fact that they have peaches in any great quantity and while the number of peaches shipped this year will be less former years yet it Is the belief of those who deal in fruit that the total weight of all peaches shipped will be greater than last year one shipper in peaking of the peach crop said that a month ago he was of the opinion that the peach crop was almost a total loss but after visiting the orchards near about he bad changed his opinion in one place a month ago the trees had ap peare dr barren he had found limbs weighted down with fruit of a larger size than bo had seen in come years the storm just made the peaches climb the canneries have sold all that they can pack and that will only halt fill the orders which they have received the entire crop this year has been sold at missouri river points at an advance of 5 per cent over the prices asked by the california fruit growers association in former years the local shippers have been governed in the prices asked by the california as their most active competitors but this year it is the califor who have followed the lead of the utah shippers and have been in the local market trying to buy fruit to cover their future the tomato crop the shippers regard as almost a total loss so far as shipments are concerned wm cragg of the western canning company when asked how much of the tomato crop will be caved said perhaps not ten per cent then he was asked if the farmers would not be in a distressed financial condition this faal and he replied no they are prospering while tomatoes have been lost and beets are not up to the average the other crops are in fine shape and the farmers are receiving good prices so that in total revenue they will obtain as much money this year as last he referred to the excellent peach i crop stating that while the output Is slightly less than heretofore the price Is one third greater owing to the scarcity of peaches in omer fruit states and also to the fact that the weber county peaches are this year the finest in size and of flavor in the history of fruit culture in sec aton |
