Show WJ COUNSEL TO SEEK BELEASCOFVANCE Thomas Vanco, who is serving a twontyyear terra in tho state prison for wlfo murder and whose case developed de-veloped a number of sensations, legal and otherwise, may soon be again in tho limelight, thrqugh application for a writ of habeas corpus which will bo filod in his behalf today by Fred -T. McGurrin, who has recently become connected with Vance as counsel. Vanco was arrested In 1908 for tho murder of Mary Vance, his wife. In addition to beating his wlfo, Vance was charged with having given her ioi6on. Ho was convicted on the charges and sentenced to death. The trial developed a great many sensational incidents, chlof among which was a spectacle of tho two Vanco children, appearing In court and testifying against their father. An appeal was made to tho supreme court of the state, and fatal oirors wero found, not only in the conduct of the caso by tho court below, but In the form of tho information upon which the case was founded. At tho time of the appeal Vance's altornes secured a number of aflldavlts which went to show that the sister of tho dead woman had, by threats and other coercivo measures, influenced the Vance children to give evidence against their fathor, and, also, it later transpired, had coached them In the manner in which their ovidenco should bo given. The affidavits also wont for to impeach the evidence the woman gave at the trial. Tho case was sent back to tho trial court for a new trial, and was heard last fall, resulting in a verdict against the defendant and his sentoncc to serve twenty years in tho atnto's , prison. |
