THE TELEPHONE is the coal man's best salesman j Many of his customers he never soes, for their orders 1 come by wire and their checks by mail. If you move into a new house or have an unexpected need 1 of fuel, you can often save a day's time by telephoning your order. , In the mining and shipping of coal, the Bell Telephone has become an important factor. The wholesale markets and sources of supply are kept in constant touch with the Bell Long Dist- v t ance Service and the danger of a coal famine ; ySi greatly reduced. fEROCKY MOUNTAIN BELL i PlJBk 1 TELEPHONE CO. (: VVV W" F' mADS0N' Dist- Mr' xlgafP Every Bell Telephone is the Center of the System, PO YOU KNOW WHAT I A WATT IS? f i For the benefit of the lady who does not always turn off the fl - liirht every time she is through with it, and also for the party t '; who says that the meter is right in the summer, but wrong in j ' the winter and for some others, I want to explain how this , i mysterious and silent messenger of life and power, coming I from the clouds and the water wheel, speeds backward and for- I ward over the wires and through your lamps 7200 alternations H '1 every minute of time. a 'i The word "Watt" is the mechanical and electrical unit of j I the measurements of power named after its inventor, an Eng- I lish mechanic. 1 An incandescent lamp with a carbon filament uses 3 1-2 i watts of electricity every hour for each candle of light given. 1 , 3 We will now substitute tb-e word "Pound "m place of "Watt," I i since every one will know the money value of a pound of meat 1 J !i and butter better than they do the money value of the watt. j i We will now say that an Edison carbon lamp uses 3 1-2 g i pounds worth of current per hour for each candle of light pro- ffl' S duced, therefore a 16 candle power lamp will use 3 1-2 times 16, or 56 pounds per hour. Hi The new Tungsten Lamp does much better than this ; only i i requiring 1 1-4 pounds for each candle of light given, therefore j. a 16 candle Tungsten uses 20 pounds per hour instead of 56 J t pounds as is required by the Edison Lamp. I EXAMPLE. 3 j 1 16 C. P. Edison Lamp uses 56 Watts in one l .hour, in 1.000 hours it will use 56,000 Watts, Jfj ' costing $o.60 J ) To which we add the price iof the lamp 25 v 1 :; . $5. So $5 So i I I 1 40 Walt 25 0. P. Tungsten in 1000 hours uses v I 40,000 Wntts, costing $4.00 j " To which we add tho price of the lamp v. 75 H l $4.75 i 75 l $1 10 i ; h j All of which means that you have saved $1.10 on the life of one f i lamp and used a 40 Watt 25 candle Tungsten instead of a 16 j I i candle, 20 Watt Edison.
