Show ERED STARK URGES ERIENDS TO ENLIST Yerba Buena Island, Cal. july 29, 1917. Friends: It might be interesting to you to know something of Navy life. You often hear that we are treated like dogB, and not humau, that we are fed -on dog meat and "Pork and Beans." That is not so, we are fed good food and plenty of it, on Monday and Thursday morning we have beans, Tuesday and Saturday we have ice cream and cake for dinner, and all the time we have very good things to eat and well prepared. Everything i inspected by the officer of the day before it is used. On the 4th of July they gave us a twenty-seven dish dinner, some feed. Revellie is blown at 5:00 o'clock sharp, then comes a cold shower bath. At 5:15 comes a 15 minute exercise and after that comes one hour in which we prepare ourselves for the day's work. We have 45 minutes to eat "Chow" and then comes class exercises and drill until 12:00, noon, we then go to class until un-til 4:00 p. m. After this we have until 9:00 p. m. for our own use. At 8:45 tattoe blows and we are to be in bed at 9:00 when taps blows, and everything is quite. ThiB is very healthful, tor I have gained sixteen pounds in two months. On Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday Sun-day we get shore liberty, two clays from 1:15 to 8:15 p. m. and the oth-1 3i- from 8:15 a. m. to 8:15 p. m. Government boats take you to Frisco Fris-co free of charge and it only costs 10 cents to go to Berkley or Oakland. Neptune Beach is only five or six miles to the east, we can go over there and have a very enjoyable time, ' all sailors and soldiers are admitted free. They have a good line of amusements amuse-ments here. A large gymnasium, swimming pool, bowling alleys, pool tables, theatres and picture shows, j tennis courts, baseball diamond, bas-1 ketball pavillion, skating rink, and many others, everything is free. Twice a week a vaudeville comes over from Frisco free of charge to us, and we have very good shows, twice a week a picture show is given. I The commandant said we had the ' most sanitary camp he had ever seen, I and to repay us he gives us much more freedom and liberty than the seamen or firemen. j If you are looking for a snap join the Hospital Corps. i We stay on this island three months until we are first class, and , then are transferred to a naval hos-j pital for three, or four more months, j 3ome are being transferred to Tearl Harbor, China, Las Animas, Mare Island, San Diego, and other hospitals. hospit-als. We have a very good chance to see the world. Isn't It much better to join where you want to than to be drafted and "put" where you arc meeded? I should say so. Respectfull yours, FRED STARK, U. S. N., formerly of Moroni, 'Utah. |
