Show PENNEY HEAD GETS BUSINESS DEGREE Earl C. Sams, president of the J. C. Penney Co., nationwide chain system sys-tem of department stores has just been made Doctor of Business Administration Ad-ministration by Kansas Wesleyan Uni-versity Uni-versity at Salina, Kansas, the degree having been conferred at Commencement Commence-ment exercises on June 4. Mr. Sams who is a native of Kansas, Kan-sas, haxing been born near Beloit, in that state, is one of the leading chain store executives of this country coun-try and has been identified with the J. C. Penney Co., for the past 21 years. He started with Mr. Penney, founder of the company in a small retail store in Kemmerer, Wyoming, in 1907 and has steadily progressed through the ranks of the company, becoming first a store manager in the I early expansion of the J. C. Penney Co., then a buyer and then first vice-president. vice-president. 1 He became president when Mr. Pennev retired from active direction of the operations of the company in 1917 to become chairman of the board of directors. In National business circles he is known as a national counselor to the United States Chamber of Commerce, from New Rochell, K Y., where he makes his home and he was a principal princi-pal speaker at the distribution luncheon lunch-eon of this organization. He is a past president of the Kiwanis club of New York City; a member of several sever-al golf and yacht clubs and a member mem-ber of the Union League Club of New York City. xT : He is a director of the Central National Na-tional Bank of New Rochelle and of the Metropolis Safe Deposit Co., of New York.; j |
