Show Glassman Not Dead. Editor Glassman, of the Ogden Standard may have that remarkable "dent" In his cranium that Cartoonist Cartoon-ist Lovcy told us about in his lecture at the A. C. of U., but If a man with such a misfortune can Hay the Democratic Demo-cratic party so successfully as did "Rill" at the State convention the other day, what could a really great man do? Glassman made a great speech before the convention, not In tlie sense of dealing with technicalities and olTcring unlimited proof of tlie infallibility in-fallibility of the Republican party, but rather In refuting and ridiculing the opposition of tlie Democratic party. In part Glassman said: "For some season our Democratic fi lends have taken a great dislike to the greatest living American of today the next president of tlie United States, Theodoic Roosevelt. In 1000 tho Democrats charged that the Republicans Re-publicans would not build the Panama Pana-ma canal. They said the lallroads did not want the canal built and that the lallroads owned the Republican party; they said that Piesldent Roosevelt Roose-velt was too slow in his action on the Panama canal business and when President Roosevelt recognized the new Panama republlc, made a treaty to build the canal and contracted to buy the Flench interests In the canal and did all this within a few davs, the Democrats shouted In thunder tones that Teddy was too fast. At first, he was too slow and then he was too fast. What kind of a gait do these Democrats want our president to travel? President Roosevelt travels the "get there" gait. At first he Is slow when caution requires It, he goes faster as he warms up like all thoroughbred thor-oughbred stock. I do not blame the Democrats for objecting to Teddy's fast gait, for If lie keeps it up the Demociats will be distanced at the poll long befoie the election day. The Democrats have been howling about the tiusts. At first theychaig-ed theychaig-ed that the president did not dare to proceed against tlie tiusts; they chaigcd that trusts owned tlie president presi-dent and when the president ordered tho suit tiled against tlie Northern Securities company, that greatest combination of lallroads, headed by those multi-millionaires, Rockefeller, Plerpont Morgan,.!. .1. Hill and E. II. llarrlnian, the Democrats said the suit never would bo tiled; they said it was all it bluff. When the suit was actually lllcd, they said It would never be tried. When the suit was tiled, they said the supreme point would not lender a decision until after election elec-tion and then throw the case out of com l, but last month tho supreme coint actually tendered its decision, declaring the Northern Securities company a trust and an unlawful one at that and directing It to bo dissolved, dissolv-ed, the most remarkable part of It all Is that every member of tho supreme court In favor of this decision were Republicans and every Democrat on the supreme court was against this decision, declaring this gieat trust to be unlawful. Think of it. The Democrats Dem-ocrats howling about the destruction of trusts and all three of their representatives repre-sentatives on the supremo bench lighting In favor of continuing the trust. There is consistency for you. The Democrats were in power four years before McKlnley's election. The same law existed then undor which this great trust case was tried, yet the Democrats never made an effort to enforce that law. When McKinley went In otllce he had the Spanish war to contend with and took little action against trusts, but no sooner was Theodore Roosevelt Installed In otllce than prompt action was taken and now when President Roosevelt has actually choked the life out of the biggest and most dan-gcious dan-gcious trust In the country the Democrats Demo-crats say that It Is all for "campaign purposes''. The piesldent has won his 11 rst big trust case and now the Republican party Is after the beef trust. President Itooscu-lt says he wants to know why the price of a live steer Is getting cheaper while the prlcu of the butchcied steer grows higher, and he is going to Mud out too, and when ho does there will be another suit and another ti ust choked to death, but It seems that Piesldent Roosevelt's trust policy Is also too fast for the Democrats. Already eastern Dcinoci.it papers have aiiotinc-ed aiiotinc-ed that II Is well for the president to go slow in his assault upon these gieat business enterprises, lest he thrust a panic upon the country. Thero jou are. If Teddy Is fast the Democrats want hlin to go slow If he Is slow they want him to go fast. |
