Pennies Drive Confinuin & TROY DOUGLAS JAY MARTIN As Primary Childrens Medical Center enters its seventh decade of providing care for children of the Intermountain area and beyond, the traditional pennies for the children concept celebrates its 40th years. The 1981 Pennies By The Inch campaign, with a goal of $1 million for use in charity care, is continuing through Feb. 21. Families are being asked to donate one penny or more for each inch of the combined heights of all family members. Dorothy E. Wells is chairman of the campaign, with Ruth H. Flint acting as Actor and football great Merlin Olsen and his wife, Susan, are honorary chairmen for the fourth consecutive year. In 1980, Primary Childrens provided $1.5 million worth of charity care for more than 1,000 needy children. Serving a wider geographical area than any other childrens medical center in the United States, pediatric Primary Childrens is the only tertiary care facility between Denver and the West P. The result was the Primary Penny Box. 766-216- 1 Childrens fundraising efforts also contributed significantly to the building fund, culminating in 1952 with the construction of the present main building. The Penny Boxes, gave way to the Primary "Penny Parade that eventually would raise more than a million dollars a year for charity care. In 1975, the LDS Church divested itself of all of its hospitals, and the Penny Parade halted. But the need remained for charity funding, and the following year, the Childrens Associates organization was formed to conduct the annual Pennies By The Inch drive. The "pennies for the children concept was preserved. All families in the Intermountain area are urged to stand tall and give a future to a child by donating pennies or dollars for every inch of height of family members. Physicians at Primary Childrens donate their services to charity cases. What began in 1911 as a convalescent care ward for crippled children in the LDS Hospital, expanded to occupy its own building by 1922., Thirty years later, with the demand for its services increasing, Primary Childrens evolved into a specialized childrens hospital. By 1973, it had become a pediatric medical center, and as the need to help children grew, so too did its commitment to charity care. The concept of accepting all children requiring medical care is fundamental to a childrens hospital, as is the need for charity funding. The pennies for the children concept was born in 1941, when the Primary Association of the LDS Church, which owned the hospital, first forwarded the idea that well children should be taught to help young .
