Show NOME IKED By DISEASES 4 San Francisco. July 11. The steamer San Juan arrived today from Nome with forty-six disappointtd gold seekers. The San Juan left Cane Nome June 30. According to the statements of her passengers pas-sengers there were eleven cases of smallpox small-pox there. There were also numerous cases of pneumonia. They predicted that the military rule now prevailing at the Cape wil lsoon adjust the differences between contending claim owners and that peace will be preserved. "From an interview with General Geo. H. Randal!, commander of the federal troops at Nome in the Nome Gold Digger of June 27 the following excerpt is taken: "It is wise to give the truth to the outside, out-side, else all kinds of wild stories are liable to be sent out as to alleged lawlessness, law-lessness, when it does not exist. There is a bad element here, it is true, but that element can be managed very well. "The most serious thing we have to consider con-sider is typhoid fever. There are a number num-ber of cases already and there is sure to be many more. The camp must be cleaned clean-ed up. The conditions in the rear of some of the saloons is frightful. It is a serious menace to health. 1 will attend to the cleaning up promptly." Department Surgeon Ebert estimated esti-mated there would prouably be 10 per cent of the people attacked, or i.n)0 case.-:. There are sixteen patients in the St. Bernard hospital, two-thirds of whom h'lve the typhoid fever, says the Diggpr. The resolution passed by the Nome Chamber of Commerce, which induced General Randall to place Nome under martial law reads as follows: "Resolved, That this body do forthwith forth-with reouest General Randall to take such steps as may be necessary to provide for the government of this camp until the arrival of the United 'States district court ih the following particulars, to-wit: "1 To provide for policing this camp. "2 To provide for proper sanitation. "3 To provide and enforce proper quarantine quar-antine regulations. "4 To provide for the general welfare and protection of life and property, including in-cluding such measures as may be necessary neces-sary to prevent and subdue tires or other destruction of property by the elements." i |
