Show ST. ELIZABETH CHUKCH. (Denver News.) Father Francis of St . Elizabeth's Church is arranging to cancel the last note of $10,000 Avhich stands against the Church. It is his desire, prior to his departure for Germany, to lift the debt and have the Church consecrated on the Feast of St. Anthony, June 13. The pastor makes the following announcement: an-nouncement: "On Aug. 31, 1S66, I was ordained a priest ini the famous1 city of Fulda, where St. Boniface, the apostle of Germany Ger-many is buried. After a brief period of nine years' service in the fatherland, I Avas, on Aug. 15, 1S75, banished from the old home, under the reign of Bismarck, Bis-marck, and m obedience to the Avisihes of my superior, have be,3n a missionary in this country ever since. The first six months I traveled, looking for a home for our exiled brethren, when at last Bishop Wadhams of Ogdensburg gave us the parish in Croghan, with a large surrounding territory. There I spent eight and a half years, building churches, school and monastery, which Avere, at the time of my departure all rvaiii for Thpn T snent se'en and a half years in the diocese of NeAvark, there also building three churches, school and sister's convent, and like-Avise like-Avise Aviped out every cent of debt thereon; from Avhence I was summoned to the far Avest, city of Denver, state of Colorado, Avhere I found a small congregation with fifteen children in school. I set to work, bought more property at a cost of $9,000, built a school and monastery at a cost of $40,-000, $40,-000, after which on Aug. 15, 1896, I began be-gan acti'e Avork on the building of the new St. Elizabeth Church, though there Avas no money in the treasury, and circumstances cir-cumstances were seA-erely augmented by the existing hard times resulting from the panic. I began by first placing plac-ing the affair under the special protection pro-tection of great St. Anthony, "determined "deter-mined not to hold, or cause to be held, any picnics, balls or festi'als of any kind. "The result indisputably proA-es that I pursued the right course, for today the beautiful stone church, 69x133 feet, and its equipments stand as an ornament orna-ment to the city, at a cost of $45,000, and all paid for except one note of $10,000, which it is my purpose to raise by popular subscription, so that on the Feast of St. Anthony, June 13, 1000, I may have the church consecrated in honor of the glorious saint, and as a memorial to my sdlver jubilee as a missionary mis-sionary in America. "This done, with the specified permission permis-sion of my superior, I set sail for the old home in Germany, there to celebrate cele-brate the date of my banishment 'midst my old friends and surroundings of twenty-five years ago: for be it under-" stood that in 1SS4, when Bismarck reconciled re-conciled himself with Rome, all" our houses were restored to us, and at the call of our father general in Rome, several fathers returned and took possession, pos-session, thereby preserving the traditions tradi-tions of our proA-ince, Avhich numbers among the old?st of provinces cf the Franciscan order. "Another purpose to this accomplishment accomplish-ment is, to lend mere substantial support sup-port to St. Clare's orphanage, harboring harbor-ing at present 120 children, and with no other visible means of support than lhat trivr-m throiij-li the nqrish Dur- in gthe progress of work on the building build-ing not a day passed but the little ones prayed fervently for ultimate success, and the protection of the laborers from accident, all of which has been subsequently subse-quently achieA-ed, and now it is but meet and just that Ave continue fostering foster-ing their home also. "In vieAA- of these facts so plainly given, I ask your support, as the extent ex-tent of your mear.fi dictate?, and by a previous arrangement with the pro-Aincial, pro-Aincial, the names of ill benefactors will be placed in the archives of the main altar, where they will be remembered remem-bered in all the prayers and daily sacrifices sac-rifices of the mass, as well as many additional masses offered up throughout through-out the A-arious houses of our order in this country and in Europe, under Avhich jurisdiction we labor, and are sustained." |
