The death is announced at Calcutta of Archbishop Goethals. the head of the Church in India, under direct jurisdiction jur-isdiction of the Congregation of the Propaganda of Rome. Born in Belgium ! in 1833. Archbishop Goethals came of a family of wealth and influence, ana was a. count of the Roman empire, and one of the Pope's domestic chaplains. After a distinguished clerical career in his native land, he was nominated in 187S to the bishopric of Calcutta, Which, at the time, like other vicariates, vicar-iates, was subjected to "extraordinary jurisdiction" over a. certain number of persons and churches by the Archbishop Arch-bishop Goa, originating in the right of patronage over bishoprics and benefices in the east, granted by the Popes of the sixteenth century to the Portuguese crown.
