Bishop Scanlan came up from the 'city on Saturday morning's train and immediately after his arrival repaired to the church, where he examined ex-amined in ' Christian doctrine, every child in the confirmation class. On last Sunday morning occurred one of the grandest ceremonies of the year when Right Rev. Bishop Scanlan of Salt Lake Citv, administered the sacrament sac-rament of confirmation to a large chiss of children at St. Mary's church. The bishop said the S o'clock mass, and the c hildren of the confii ination class received re-ceived holy communion from his hands. Before 10 o'clock the , children assembled assem-bled in the class rooms of the school, and as tliey filed into the church for the 10 o'clock mass, which was said by Father Galligan. they made a beautiful picture the girls in pure white wearing wear-ing wreaths and veils and the boys in neat black suits, each one carrying a prettily decorated candle. After mass the bishop preached an eloquent sermon ser-mon appropriate to the occasion, and after confirming the children, he spoke beautifully to them of the sacrament they had just received, and at the conclusion con-clusion they all repaired to the different differ-ent class rooms. The sisters certainly deserve an unlimited amount of credit for the deportment of the children. Mr. Henry Welsh stood sponsor, for the boys who were confirmed, and Mrs. Henry Welsh for the girls. The class has been for some time under the instruction in-struction of Rev. Father Galligan, and was the largest in the history of the church at Park City, numbering over 1C0. The altars were elaborately adorned for the solemn occasion by Miss Malone and Miss Florence Kelly; potted plants were in profusion, and exquisite cut flowers provided by Miss Agnes Harrington surrounded the tabernacle. tab-ernacle. The regular choir, under the direction of Miss Malone, rendered appropriate ap-propriate music. At 2 o'clock the students of St. Mary's school entertained the bishop by rendering a programme consisting of choruses, an address, songs, etc. Immediately Im-mediately after the entertainment the bishop left for Salt Lake, promising the students of St. Mary's that he would make a great effort to be present at their closing exercises on June 20. Mr. Joe Sullivan spent a few days in Salt Lake last week. Foreman Gillis of the Silver King mine feels much elated over the arrival ar-rival of a bran new boy in the family. Mrs. J. C. Harrington spent a few days visiting in Salt Lake this week. Mr. J. G. Sullivan, manufacturer of the Silver King cigar, has a new baby girl in his family, and consequently Jack is passing more cigars around than ever before. . The A. O. U. W. excursion to Salf Lake on the 7th inst. was an enjoyable trip, patronized by a large number of our citizens. &- , ,. Mrs. Sarah Wilson and Mrs. John Conlon entertained a number of their friends on Tuesday evening. Dainty refreshments re-freshments were served and an enjoyable enjoy-able time had by all. i- Mrs. M. J. Daly left here Thursday for a month's visit to Nebraska. .; Mrs. Sarah Wilson departed Wednesday Wednes-day on an extended trip to Europe. . Miss Annie Deason left Sunday for Salt Lake to attend summer school at "the -university. |
